Prime Minister Gaston Browne has written to the President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel congratulating the country on the anniversary of the Cuban revolution.
Below is the letter.
On behalf of the government and the people of Antigua and Barbuda, I wish to take this opportunity to extend the best wishes to you and to the government and the people of the republic of Cuba, on the 61st anniversary of the Cuban revolution.
The Cuban revolution of 1959 has earned a place in history as one of the most important and transformative events in the world. Like David’s victory over Goliath, the revolution represents an incredible victory against wind and tide and a symbol of freedom in a world dominated by oppression.
At the beginning of this new year, we reflect on the recent developments in our hemisphere, which have undermined vital stability and national interests in Latin America and the Caribbean; however, despite these setbacks, the values of the revolution not only have Survived, but also thrive in the st century. The courage of leaders such as José Martí, Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, continues to inspire many in the global south in an epic fight against imperialism and interventionist policies.
Your Excellence, I also wish to take this opportunity to assure you of the deep affinity of Antigua and Barbuda for Cuba, a country with which we share a close consistency of values, including a proud history of freedom of oppression. We are still grateful for the generous provision of technical support in various fields, which has resulted in quantifiable and tangible benefits for the people of my country.
Today, by reflecting on the Cuban revolution and its many achievements, we also reflect on the lasting legacy of equality and social justice of President Fidel Castro, who will live for the benefit of our respective nations and this region.
Accept, your excellence, the assurances of my highest consideration.

And he People of Antigua and Barbuda respond with a huge “AMEN”. This is socialist solidarity at its best. Our brothers and sisters and comrades in Cuba are to be commended. In the words of our late comrade, Maurice Bishop, “is freedom we making”. Forward ever! Backward Never. Thank you Prime Minister Gaston Browne for leading us forward in the tradition of our labour, social democrat, democratic socialist founders. The spirit of V.C. Bird still lives and walks among us.
