Antigua: Boat in West African migrant tragedy found with body

19

LOOP: An update has been received on what may have happened to the vessel which left Antigua last month and overturned with West Africans and Antiguans, resulting in the loss of three lives, some being saved and several missing.

According to a statement on the Cabinet notes from the Office of the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, there was a report that a small fishing boat which unlawfully departed Antigua with 32 passengers and overturned near St Kitts, drifted into Puerto Rico’s waters with one body on board.

It was stated that a group of about 15 West Africans who are now in Guadeloupe, are likely to be dealt with by those authorities. The West Africans and two Antiguans who were rescued by the St Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard 10 days ago remain in that country’s custody, it was reported.

On March 27, 2023, thirty West Africans and two Antiguans left Urlings, Antigua on a fishing boat destined for the US Virgin Islands.

A few hours into the journey, the boat was struck by large waves and capsized.

Fourteen Cameroonians and two Antiguans were rescued from the ocean while 13 were reported missing.

In addition, Cabinet held a discussion about the West Africans who have been present in Antigua since late December 2022.

The UNHCR and the IOM have concluded a preliminary report which is to be examined by the national agencies that are playing a part in the resettling exercise.

The now defunct Antigua Airways charter flights, had brought over 900 West Africans from Nigeria and left them in the Caribbean in dire circumstances.

About 637 of the more than 900 Africans, who touched down in Antigua from Nigeria between November and January as tourists, are on the island.

    • UPP’S PUZZLE ARE JUST NOT FITTING TOGETHER… IIT OBVIOUS THAT THEY TRYING TO GO THE EXTRA MILE TO INDICT THE LABOUR PARTY ADMINISTRATION & MORESO THE PM INTO SOME SKULL DUGERY BUT THEIR INVESTIGATIVE SKILLS ARE CLEARLY POOR AND IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE TRUTH OF THIS WHO AFRICAN SAGA IS BACKFIRING AT UPP MAKING THEM LOOK LIKE INTELLECTUAL IDIOTS.

      • You can spin your nonsense as much as you want @ Bluddy Bloke, however, the key to UNLOCKING why the Africans were left stranded here on “Gaston Browne Island”🏝 (damn! I meant Antigua & Barbuda) is all about an independent investigation without the ABLP – or even the UPP – getting involved.

JUST A MATTER OF TIME NOW … TICK TOCK TICK!

      • @ Bluddy Bloke

you not only sound like an intellectual idiot, but you utterances are PURE DUNG.

  1. Question:
Could someone Anyone give an accurate figure as to the number of Africans presently on island!
    First 900
    Then 637
    Then 400
Uhm…Talk The Truth ..inquiring minds want to know..
The country already has an influx of so many nationalities to include Antiguans who are trying to survive we ALL need to “EXHALE ”
    TOO MANY LOOP HOLES …
    MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!!!

    • Antiguan everywhere without status , some jump through the window since in 50 , 60, and 70 still have no status. Why did they leave Antigua. Plenty are u a walk a wear dashikie Roy’s the place and a say I yo a go back an Africa. Since this African story a you tap wear them. Bunch a hypocrite. Ppl from all over come here I number and compete with local and not a drum has bee herd. Syrian, Chinese and European and are u lap are u tale. Me to want something happen and are u have to migrate. The ppl and them na want tap yah. Are I too wicked

      • @Honerable52
When the authorities catch up with Antiguans without status in their country, what do they do with them? Tell them they are welcomed to stay, give them permanent residency and permission to work? No they jail them and deport them on the first flight out. You should go to any African country without proper documentation and see what they do with you. Gaston will break all the rules to let people into the country to vote for him in the future. He doesn’t love anybody, just maintaining Power.

      • Point is missing. completely. Antigua go all over the world by buying their tickets without the anticipation of going somewhere else neither do they come as rich tourists.

  2. This is what exposed Gaston as a reckless, thoughtless leader to me. He has done bold things and appeared to be intelligent. I’m not so sure he is a good leader anymore.

  3. These tragic situations are getting worse.

Without question, there now has to be a full independent enquiry from INDEPENDENT observers and NON POLITICAL organisations.

The number of deaths and stranded Africans is so embarrassing with the world watching aghast, whilst our government hides away hoping that this whole trafficking situation will go away.

I love my country, but to have a demeaning, degrading and discreditable ABLP government in charge of proud and patriotic autochthonous Antiguans is now beyond embarrassing.

ABLP, if as you say, you have NOTHING to hide, then let an outside organisation or body look into this.

  4. I hope when the UNHCR report is finalized it would be made public. There is really no end to this tragedy and the drama is certain to continue. Antigua is really clueless as to the amount of West Africans still remaining in the country. The local immigration Department was complicit in all of this and it is regrettable that they are continuing to have any future role in this sordid affair. 15 West Africans are in Guadeloupe and this is all adding to the drama involving them. These Cameroonians were all conned into coming to Antigua, a place that most of them had never heard of. Their aim is to get to the United States and after the disappointment of landing in Antigua, their aim though temporarily thwarted, would not be stopped. They will continue to be a “bother” to all the neighbouring islands as they make future attempts to leave Antigua and get to the US. There is no stopping them.

  5. See it’s not going away GB. You need to face this head on and let the gauntlet fall where it may. Especially if you have nothing to hide as you say. So can this boat be identified as the one. Are the 15 in Guadeloupe from the same missing, if not how did they get their? Just puzzled.

  6. What the seaweed am I hearing here? Are they trying to suggest that this is the same boat the capsized off St. Kitts? So it artfully and gracefully drifted undetected to Puerto Rico with a body in it? Just pass me with this sci fi action please.

  7. I can remember the St. Kitts law police saying that the boat is buried in what is approximately 700 meters of water and cannot be retrieved. So if they had used air craft and search they could have most likely found this boat if it is the same boat with this person alive. Honestly I do not think this is the same boat.
Our immigration has been told that when it comes to these West Africans that their is no boundaries. They can do anything illegal- found with illegal passports set them free . Left Antigua illegal and deported back to Antigua – set them free. Left on a stolen boat and If and when St.Kitts send them back to Antigua – set them free/ except the two Antiguans. Wendell Robinson would have a field day with you guys . Since by the time you are ready to try the two Antiguans the Africans will be all gone, except the three dead men – dead men tell no tales .

  8. Give it a rest. Wasn’t a picture shown of the boat in said waters in the news ? So where this stuff of Puerto Rico come from with all the searches air and sea that took place? now 15 in Guadalupe. Did another boat showed up and rescued these 15 to the French isle? It was stated Guadalupe was where the boat originated from.
