Antigua & Barbuda Youth Delegate Back From Regional Disaster Conference

1

Antigua and Barbuda’s youth delegate to last week’s regional Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) conference in St Martin has developed an interest in further promoting disaster risk reduction among the nation’s young people and her community.

Marina Walker, an Emergency Medical Technician from Barbuda, participated in the December 2nd – 6th conference with other young people from member states of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the organisers of the event.

Marina said she gained a wide range of knowledge which she hopes to pass on to her community
as the conference further cemented the importance of communities being better able to help themselves in times of disasters. She is also hoping to collaborate with the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) to further train young people on the importance of disaster risk reduction.

The Barbuda resident noted how passionate the other young participants at the conference were about seeing a change in behaviour as it relates to disaster risk reduction throughout the region and believes that she and the other youth delegates can help make a difference.

During the CDM conference, Walker presented a cultural piece about disasters in Antigua and Barbuda which was composed by Antiguan Malique Marsh and participated in a youth debate under the theme “The role of local governance in advancing community-based resilience”.

Marina was also involved in a school outreach programme informing students about CDEMA and the importance of disaster preparedness.
