Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs E Paul Chet Greene has been given the power to extend the deadline for illegal migrants to participate in the amnesty program.
A note from the Cabinet said the decision was taken after government ministers examined a report from Greene on the amnesty.
“The Cabinet learned that the Immigration Department can effectively process 80 persons daily and that may prove to be insufficient for the 40 working days, six hours per day, to achieve the object of addressing the needs of the Amnesty Program. The law was adjusted to give the Minister authority to go beyond the time frame, if necessary,” the note said.
Over 2,000 people are eligible to participate in the amnesty that ends on April 30.
Meanwhile, lawful residents of Antigua and Barbuda from the Dominican Republic do not require visas to re-enter after visiting their home country.
But the government said Dominicans, who spend more than six months abroad, would lose their residence status under the law.

Looking at the picture of non-nationals lining up to regularized their status, I ask the question what has Antigua come to? You mean so many people in Antigua illegally and the government and immigration department do nothing about it? How are all these people surviving? Working under the table for Labour Party supporters for minimum wage? Antiguans should be vexed at the number of illegals in our country and organize demonstrations in front of the registration centres. This is not the first amnesty is given. This government can do as they like without consulting Antiguans because they think are we docile.
The Labour Party loves power and will do anything, legal or illegal to stay in power. They don’t care for native Antiguans.
