On Friday 9th June 2023 the National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda (NYPAAB) will host its annual youth parliament debate.
The debate, which will commence at 9:00 a.m. at the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda, will consist of youth, current and former parliamentarians.
To include Ezekiel Francois, Esquire Henry, Christal Percival, Minister Samantha Marshall, Celine Edwards, Aziza Lake, Shaquan O’Neil, Chrysean Jarvis, Senator Shawn Nicholas, Zachary Phillips, Jahmaal Frederick, Marver Woodley and Jonathan Wehner.
There will be three legislative items on the agenda: Rural Housing for Youth Bill, 2023, a Resolution of the House of Assembly, Approving the Decision of the General Assembly to Call for Action to Rehabilitate and Develop At-Risk Youth and a Resolution of the House of Assembly, Approving the Decision of the General Assembly to Stand in Intergenerational Solidarity with Young People.
The debate will address the recent rise in youth and gang-related violence that has become a source of public concern while making a clarion call for all relevant stakeholders to collaborate on the creation of innovative strategies targeted at quelling youth violence.
It will also praise the efforts of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the Ministry of Social Transformation for pushing for the transformation of the juvenile justice system through the Juvenile Justice Reform Project (JJRP) while emphasizing that priority must be given to the completion of facilities such as the Boy’s Training School, which are necessary for restorative justice for young people, among other things.
Additionally, the debate will address the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, approved by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.
The NYPAAB believes that the youth agenda should be pushed by young people but should also emphasize the need for youth to lean on the advice, wisdom and experience of previous generations.
Thus, the debate will affirm the need for all generations to actively engage in youth development as a tool to ensure sustainable development while imploring public and private agencies to create avenues for the holistic involvement of young people in all areas of business, academia, politics, religion and the like.

UPP promised youth 25% of Senators…NOT ONE youth Senator on their side.
At least youth parliament put them to shame
Well I watch the debate of the youth parliament and I was so pleased to know that if these are our future politicians our county is in good hands.
It does put to shame the quality of the candidates we presently have at the opposition side in our parliament
Perhaps we should have as a qualification that those wanting to represent us in parliament should have some experience in debating, Or have participated in youth parliamentary debates.
It will put Antigua and Barbuda’s parliament on the map of having the best debating parliament ever. And take away the stain we now have with the disrespectful display by the member of St. Peter, Asot Michael, having no decorum whatsoever for Authoriy or whosoever. A total disgrace each time I think of it. People from St. Peter should feel ashamed for such representation in their name.
Kudos once again to the youth of this beloved fair land of ours.
May the Lord Bless your path in the future
