Antigua and Barbuda’s Leaders Unite to Tackle Water Crisis

6

The importance of a reliable water supply cannot be overstated.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Opposition Leader Jqamal Pringle have set aside their political differences to address Antigua and Barbuda’s water issue, showcasing the leadership needed to tackle it.

During parliamentary sessions, Browne and Pringle delivered passionate speeches, urging their parties to work together on the longstanding water production and distribution problem.

The issue had previously been a source of political blame.

This discussion arose during an amendment to a resolution from September 2020 when the government took on a financial liability of EC $169 million to improve the island’s utility infrastructure managed by the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).

Pringle proposed a dedicated water production agency, leaving APUA for distribution.

Pringle called for bipartisan collaboration and suggested hotels contribute to a fund for maintaining a reverse osmosis plant.

Prime Minister Browne agreed on distribution issues but also highlighted water misuse due to low pricing, advocating for higher water rates.

Their unified efforts offer hope for a brighter water future.

  1. Ever since I was born, many moons ago, Antigua has had a water problem. It was bad enough when the major catchment area Potworks Dam was at its capacity, but over the years with Potworks all but dry, the domestic water situation has gotten worse and worse. And even with governments decision to rely on and install desalination plants at selective areas, the water situation still remains unreliable and deplorable at best.
This is 2023, not 1973. Water and electricity are two essential services. It is pathetic to be still experiencing water and electrical woes in this modern era. Government needs to put up or shut up and solve the water and electricity situation once and for all. For too long we have put up with this nonsense. It’s time to hold the government of the day accountable for these failures.

  2. No one Unite to do anything. The UPP was outsmarted by Gaston Browne and had no respond when he called them out. But I’ll bet you they will never work with the ABLP on anything. Their Chairwoman will not allow that to happen. Remember when Covid they were also invited to take part and resolve the many issues facing the country. They said the ABLP was the government and needed to take full responsibility for solving the problem. The same thing will happen again. Pringle will have to go back on his word. These guys are not ready for prime time yet, and Gaston Browne will outsmart them each time.

    • “… and Gaston Browne will outsmart them each time”.

Mentioning ‘Gaston Browne’ and ‘smart’ in the same sentence; isn’t that some sort of an OXYMORON? 🤔
