Antigua and Barbuda wants to tax homes valued at EC$3 million and more

8

Cabinet Notes:

The Cabinet invited the Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and three of his IRD colleagues to determine how best to impose the property tax to be imposed on homes valued at EC$3 million and more.

The IRD Commissioner informed that the tax year commences in November each year; consequently, the expanded tax would come into effect in November 2023 and collections would then begin in 2024.

An assessment of the value of the properties that would be impacted by the tax will require a register of those properties, and a Notice would then be served on the homeowners in keeping with the property tax law.

  1. It’s one thing to say you going to tax a man. The problem I have is being taxed, and not getting a service other than garbage collection at my residence. No gov’t water, no proper roads, I barely get mail….

  2. Could this mean a mass exodus by the super rich living on the island?

Well, if it means that Gaston has to leave Antigua fir good, maybe its not such a bad idea 😁

  3. The problem I have with all these taxes on the books, is that they are not enforced. And then every election year they get amnesty. It makes no sense if you ask me. Work on enforcement of people paying their taxes. It may be expensive in the beginning but after some years people will comply with making payments. And believe me it is not the small property owners that are so delinquent. And they would dare the IRD to come and collect. They will play the system and take the IRD through many legal procedures.

  4. If the house is your own why are you still being taxed? People you have to buy land from the government, pay mortgage at ridiculous rates and then pay to own the house.

  5. The #Trickle_Down Economy is flawed. The rich knows how to hide their #Stach like squirrels hiding and hoarding their nuts.

    #Tiny_Houses are trending!
