Antigua and Barbuda – Hon. Samantha Marshall, the Minister of State for the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation, and Environment, has issued a heartfelt statement to citizens, residents, and visitors as the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season commences.
Emphasizing the importance of preparedness, the Minister highlighted the profound impact even a single tropical cyclone can have on the lives and livelihoods of countless individuals.
Underlining the vulnerability of the twin-island nation, Minister Marshall pointed to past experiences, such as the devastation caused by Hurricane Luis in 1995 and the decimation of Barbuda by Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Despite the nation’s resilience and the subsequent recovery efforts, it is imperative that preparedness remains a priority for all citizens in the face of natural disasters.
Minister Marshall acknowledged the recent flooding in November 2020, which caught many off guard and resulted in significant damage to infrastructure.
This event served as a reminder that complacency is not an option and that preparedness is an ongoing responsibility for every individual, family, and community.
The Minister drew attention to predictions indicating an above-normal hurricane season for 2023.
Regardless of the forecasts, she stressed that it only takes one powerful storm to disrupt personal and economic growth, hindering the progress made since previous major impacts. Learning from past disasters, the nation has implemented stronger infrastructure and educated its people on preparation and response mechanisms.
However, this progress should not breed complacency, and everyone must play their part in safeguarding against or mitigating the impacts of natural hazards.
Minister Marshall called for immediate action, urging individuals, families, religious organizations, schools, commercial entities, and governmental and non-governmental organizations to finalize their disaster plans.
The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) stands ready to provide necessary information and assistance in disaster preparedness.
Addressing the importance of accurate information, the Minister cautioned against being influenced by misinformation and disinformation, as it could incite unnecessary fear and panic. Citizens were encouraged to rely on credible sources and to remain vigilant throughout the season.
In a rallying call to communities, Minister Marshall implored able-bodied individuals to prepare for potential disasters and be prepared to assist their fellow villagers and the nation as a whole.
Collaboration and a collective effort would be crucial in ensuring a prompt recovery and restoring a sense of normalcy.
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of its citizens during this period.
It stands firmly with responding agencies, ready to provide necessary resources should the need arise, as it has done in the past during times of adversity.
As the Minister concluded, she reiterated her call for every citizen and resident to be prepared not only for the current hurricane season but also for any natural hazards that may impact the nation.
With a sense of unity and preparedness, Antigua and Barbuda will navigate the challenges of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season, guided by the hope that God will continue to bless the beloved twin-island nation.

Rather than issue insulting PR pieces that make no sense. How about a policy from the government and an action plan to deal with disasters?
What is the government doing to improve the infrastructure against disasters ?
