Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced a substantial allocation of over $80 million in the 2024 budget for the comprehensive development of roads in Antigua and Barbuda.

The statement was made during the budget presentation, outlining the government’s commitment to advancing the nation’s roadways for the benefit of citizens and the economy.

Leading the initiative is the major road rehabilitation project, primarily financed through resources provided by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

According to Browne, In 2023, significant progress was made in the construction and resurfacing of key roadways, including the Sir Sydney Walling Highway, Valley Road North, Anchorage Road, and Old Parham Road.

These corridors are anticipated to be largely completed before the close of 2024, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.

A noteworthy component of the project is the long-awaited renovation of Darkwood Bridge, also to be financed by the CDB.

This vital infrastructure upgrade is expected to improve connectivity and contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of the transportation network.

In his address to the Parliament, Prime Minister Gaston Browne emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to road construction, repair, and maintenance.

He stated, “The arteries connecting our communities are crucial to our nation’s prosperity. Through strategic planning and efficient execution, we will enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and ensure safer driving conditions for our motorists.”

The allocated funds are earmarked for projects across the length and breadth of Antigua and Barbuda, with a focus on developing several miles of roads on Barbuda.

During the upcoming budget debates, the Minister responsible for Public Works is expected to provide detailed insights into the specific plans and strategies the government will employ to enhance the road network.
