Antigua and Barbuda Renews Request for Scotland Yard’s Help in Crime Investigations

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has confirmed that his administration is renewing its request for external assistance to bolster local law enforcement efforts in investigating recent homicides.

During his weekly Browne and Browne Show on Saturday, the Prime Minister revealed that the government had previously sought support from Scotland Yard to aid in solving outstanding murder cases, including the recent tragic killing of nine-year-old Chantel Crump, and is now pushing to expedite the process.

“I know that the Ministry of Legal Affairs, with the assistance of Foreign Affairs, had written to Scotland Yard to assist us with two females who were killed sometime last year. I’m told—I just followed up today with the Attorney General—that there may have been some delays. I am not aware of precisely what created this delay, but I’ve asked him to kindly renew the request to get Foreign Affairs to renew the request and to try and get them here as soon as possible because we want to demonstrate to the Antiguan public that we’re utilizing all resources available to us, including external assistance.”

Browne noted that the Ministry of Legal Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had written to Scotland Yard seeking investigative support for two homicide cases from last year. However, he acknowledged delays in the process and has now directed the Attorney General to renew the request and ensure the timely arrival of foreign experts.

“We want to demonstrate to the Antiguan public that we are utilizing all resources available to us, including external assistance, to ensure justice is served,” Browne stated. He added that his government is committed to restoring a sense of security and preventing further violent crimes.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of comprehensive investigative strategies, noting that law enforcement authorities have been actively pursuing leads and have made significant progress in recent cases.

In light of increasing public concern over crime and safety, the government is also considering additional measures to enhance police capabilities, including the acquisition of cadaver dogs to assist in locating missing persons and hidden crime scenes. Browne reiterated that his administration remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining Antigua and Barbuda’s reputation as a safe country.

This latest push for external assistance comes amid heightened public calls for swift justice, with some citizens advocating for tougher crime-fighting strategies and harsher sentencing for violent offenders. While Browne expressed skepticism over calls for the reinstatement of the death penalty, he affirmed that the government has already strengthened sentencing laws to ensure perpetrators face severe consequences.

As the government moves forward with its renewed request for international investigative support, law enforcement agencies continue to appeal to the public for any information that may assist in solving ongoing cases.

  1. Do you think Scotland Yard has people sitting around waiting to be called overseas given the amount of crime in London? This is not 1991 where they go out there and only 2 village boys go away for killing the Comptroller of Customs. The boys Armstrong and Welch gave up the “Rich man” name and nothing came of it, so no thanks. This is a repeat of that very same situation.
