Antigua and Barbuda Records Surge in Visitor Arrivals, Yet Hotel Occupancy Lags

2

Despite a 25% increase in visitor arrivals compared to 2019, hotel occupancy in Antigua and Barbuda averaged only 62.2% in August, a slight drop from the 64.5% recorded in August 2019.

Most visitors opted for Villas, Guest Houses, or the Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) market, with over 60% staying in private homes.

The report attributes this to visitors arriving for Carnival and returning home for the event.

Although the surge in arrivals was driven by the US market, it did not translate into a proportional rise in hotel occupancy, highlighting a discrepancy in the tourism sector.

  1. It shows that many tourists especially locals returning home, are booking into Airbnb properties. And many are not registered properties. The government needs to do something about these lost revenues. Even the cars they rent are not with the R license plate.
