Antigua and Barbuda Plans Shift in Ballot-Counting Process

3

Antigua and Barbuda’s ballot-counting process for general elections is poised for transformation.

Newly-appointed Supervisor of Elections, Ian S Hughes, aims to streamline the process to expedite result announcements.

Hughes cited the success of counting ballots at polling stations in other Caribbean nations, leading to results within hours of polls closing.

He advocated for adopting this method in Antigua and Barbuda, which would require legislative adjustments.

The notion of electronic voting was also discussed, pending public consultations and political party involvement.

Currently, only Antigua and Barbuda and St. Kitts transport ballot boxes centrally for counting, a practice Hughes seeks to modernize.(Observer)

  1. Counting of the ballots at the place of voting would certainly be an improved process in the election machinery. I am really surprised that efforts to do this was so long in coming.

  2. Mr. Hughes firstly let me say congratulations and that I believe that you are an honest person. However, for transparency and good ethical practices I don’t think so much members of your family should be involved in our elections. These are not far off family sir but your wife , your niece and sister-in-laws . Too close for comfort. Especially knowing that all of you are from an ALP background.
