The government is assessing the potential impact of U.S. aid cuts, particularly in climate resilience programs, following reports that the U.S. is scaling back contributions to the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund.
During the post-cabinet media briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst said the government is closely monitoring the situation, as reduced funding could affect small island developing states (SIDS) like Antigua and Barbuda.
“The Trump administration appears to be pulling back from global climate financing, and that will have consequences for countries like ours,” Hurst said. “We must now explore alternative funding sources to ensure that our climate adaptation initiatives continue.”
The Green Climate Fund has supported projects aimed at strengthening resilience against rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and other climate-related challenges. The Loss and Damage Fund, established to help vulnerable nations recover from climate disasters, has also been a key source of support.
Hurst noted that while U.S. funding has played a significant role in global climate efforts, Caribbean nations must work collectively through CARICOM and other international bodies to secure new sources of financing.
Antigua and Barbuda has been advocating for climate justice and sustainable financing at global forums, including the recent COP conferences.
The government is expected to engage with partners in the European Union, China, and regional financial institutions to address potential funding gaps.
Officials say they will continue to monitor developments and adjust their climate policies accordingly.

More should be done to explore alternative partnerships to fill the gap left by these cuts.
It’s good that the government is staying on top of this. U.S. aid and climate funding are vital for the country’s development.
Of course seek alternative sources of funding! This heavy dependency/ beggy-beggy practice on and towards Uncle Sam has dumbed down our true potential and exposed thr ID for what it really is! A rogue country headed for its own self-destruction! Let them continue to downplay global warning and watch them burn to the ground. Watch them grapple with hurricanes, the likes of which they have never seen before. Watch their polarized communities cannibalize one another for survival. So those “Christians” among us who are always quick to quip “God no lub ugly”, …..let’s watch.
