MoE convenes public discourse on Mathematics

Antigua and Barbuda –A public discussion, ‘The Heart of the Matter’ organised by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Creative Industries, will be held on Thursday to discuss various aspects of mathematics education, with an aim of enhancing what currently exists.

Mathematics results for students at the primary and secondary school levels are concerning for education officials, who have taken steps to improve the subject area, in order to yield satisfactory outcomes.

In addition to the remedial work being carried out with students and new and improved approaches being adopted, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Creative Industries is also engaging key stakeholders, the latest being Thursday’s forum.

“This conversation aims to address the challenges faced by students, identify effective strategies, and foster collaboration among stakeholders to enhance Mathematics education in our country,” said Shoya Hurst, Acting Education Officer, Curriculum Mathematics.

The event will be held at the Sir John E. St. Luce Finance & Conference Centre, commencing at 5 p.m on Thursday 14th March, 2024.

  1. Introduce S.T.E.A.M. – Science Technology engineering ARTS & Mathematics, as the power source, in the Education system and watch the babies to adults thrive.

    S.T.E.A.M. is slowly replacing S.T.E.M. to produce better cognitive thinkers. It’s a simple adjustment to make in the Schools Curriculum, as in, the Arts and the Sciences share a [symbiotic] relationship similar to, plants and animals.

  2. Nice when people can discuss and collaborate to solve problems with an open mind. Beware: New strategies and initiatives are great, but sometimes there’s no evidence that some work yet educators might be forced to adopt them. So, they should also look at everything that has been tried in the past and reinstitute any measures proven beneficial in the past along with trying new methods as needed. Overall, my personal opinion is that a closer look should be taken at exactly what Math is really needed to be useful in different fields of work and tailor different syllabuses accordingly. Not everyone needs to learn all the advanced topics and if a person is good at other things, there should be a field in one of their areas of interest that they can still pursue.
