LOOP:

Talks are underway with a new airline that is expected to fill in the gap left by the cancellation of flights from Air Canada to Antigua and Barbuda.

Air Canada announced over the weekend that it is extending its temporary suspension of flights to Antigua and Barbuda and the rest of the region to October 29, 2022.

The airline announced in January that it was suspending flights to the twin-island state as well as several other destinations until April 30 but it has now decided to extend its cancellation.

“Air Canada has pulled their flights but at this time we are serviced by WestJet and SunWing, each having one weekly flight from Toronto on the weekend. We are presently having discussions and dialogue with another Canadian carrier for this winter season,” Tourism Minister Charles Max Fernandez said

He said discussions are at an advanced stage and it also looks very promising.

“We are confident that this would be fruitful. Discussions are ongoing and we are at an advanced stage and hope to make an announcement very quickly,” Fernandez added.

The prospective airline said the decision, taken in collaboration with the Government of Canada, is designed to achieve an orderly reduction in service and minimise customer impact.
