Antigua and Barbuda Leads Discussion on Climate Resilience for SIDS at COP29

Antigua and Barbuda took center stage in advancing climate resilience for Small Island Developing States when Prime Minister, Gaston Browne participated in a high-level panel discussion, “How Can the Center of Excellence Assist SIDS in Building Climate Resilience Through Technology, Data, Financing, and Partnerships with the DBRP.” Held at the Commonwealth Secretariat Pavilion, the event was attended by government leaders, international experts, and stakeholders committed to addressing the unique climate challenges facing SIDS.

In his keynote remarks, Prime Minister Browne highlighted the pivotal role of the SIDS Center of Excellence, based in Antigua, in equipping SIDS with the tools and partnerships needed to strengthen climate resilience. “The challenges that SIDS face are profound, but we are not without resources or allies,” stated Prime Minister Browne. “Through the Center of Excellence, Antigua and Barbuda is committed to leading the way in harnessing technology, data, and innovative financing solutions to create a sustainable future for our nations.”

The Center of Excellence is a key initiative dedicated to empowering SIDS by fostering innovation, knowledge sharing, and training across four core pillars: a Global Data Hub, a Technology and Innovation Mechanism, an Island Investment Forum, and a Debt Sustainability Support Service. Each component is designed to help SIDS address specific barriers to climate resilience and sustainable development.

Prime Minister Browne underscored the importance of partnerships in driving the Center’s mission. “To truly address our climate challenges, we must work hand in hand with the private sector, especially in technology and finance. By bringing together public and private expertise, we can leverage cutting-edge solutions for climate resilience that are tailored to our unique needs.”

The event also discussed the role of private sector technology companies in supporting SIDS. Through collaborations, SIDS can utilize advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence, and innovative financing models such as blockchain to better manage disaster risks and unlock new funding sources.

The Prime Minister further emphasized the importance of making climate finance accessible and straightforward for SIDS. “We must break down the complex pathways to international funding and establish clear, accessible routes for SIDS to receive the financial support they need,” he stated. “The upcoming New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance presents an opportunity for us to set a new standard, and Antigua and Barbuda, through the Center of Excellence, is ready to lead this effort.”

The event highlighted the power of partnerships, with attendees discussing potential collaborations between governments, financial institutions, and technology firms to create actionable solutions for SIDS’ climate resilience.

Through its role at COP29, Antigua and Barbuda has underscored its leadership in advocating for SIDS and ensuring that the voices of small islands are heard in the global climate dialogue.

  1. Bravo for our prime minister Gaston brown, I love when he challenges the status quo, but there is one thing I want to see him do,he is a millionaire unlike those white people at mill Reef and jumby bay who are wealthy by being beneficiary of slavery of black people ,if Gaston can build his home and probably get two more millionaires to do so in mill reef I make an oath to be his bag carrier, knowing that my challenge would have changed the socioeconomics status and ideology of black people for future generations to come. My ideology is not to be envious of wealth accumulation but to make it benefit our race.
