On July 3rd, A Few Good Men Mentorship Program was officially launched at the department of environment conference room.
The Founders of the mentorship program, Mr. Jamie Saunders and Mr. Arthur Thomas Jr indicated that the program’s vision is to “create a cadre of positive male role models in Antigua and Barbuda, that will form part of a larger network, dedicated to supporting the healthy development of boys and provide a safe space for them to receive guidance, skills and constructive advice.”
The inaugural session of the program included a keynote address from Senator Clement Antonio, which revolved around the importance of social programs and initiatives geared towards providing spaces for young men and boys to be supported and their potential nurtured.
Arthur Thomas Jr, Attorney at Law, and one of the founders of the program engaged the boys on professional development and preparing for the World of work, while Mr. Carl Christopher led the mentees in a session on youth leadership and the importance of developing skills and traits that will allow them to be a positive influence and example to their peers. Refreshments were sponsored by a group of retired home economics teachers who go by the name Retireistic Group, the program founders expressed thank to them for this contribution to the program.
The mentorship program is targeted to boys and young men between the ages of 12-18 years of age.
Saunders and Thomas indicated that sessions will be held once monthly, initially, and that young men can benefit from the program and its session on a voluntary basis, and also highlighted that the program will be engaging with schools, churches, community groups, as well as sports groups.

Excellent initiative that all of us no matter our political persuasion or party affiliation can get behind and support. Our young men absolutely need that kind of support, guidance and positive reassurance especially when they are trying to make positive changes to their lives.
Great move. I pray both young and old will be determined to see this come to bear the fruits it’s intended to bear.

FACT SHEET: Opportunity for all: President Obama Launches My Brother’s Keeper Initiative to Build Ladders of Opportunity For Boys and Young Men of Color
President Obama is taking action to launch My Brother’s Keeper – a new initiative to help every boy and young man of color who is willing to do the hard work to get ahead. For decades, opportunity has lagged behind for boys and young men of color. But across the country, communities are adopting approaches to help put these boys and young men on the path to success. The President wants to build on that work. We can learn from communities that are partnering with local businesses and foundations to connect these boys and young men to mentoring, support networks, and skills they need to find a good job or go to college and work their way up into the middle class. And the Administration will do its part by helping to identify and promote programs that work.
I do not like the name “A few good men” . This seems to suggest that we only have a few good men. I have mentored several young men in my life time. Although it is a good program, i honestly do not like the name. It’s like drawing attention to yourselves- you are the few good me .
Happy to hear of this ..keep up the good work
In Europa in the late 80s when this problem was identified especially among the black minority youth, government spend lots of money on programs putting more social workers to engage these groups. Many recreational places were established such as recording studio’s because the youth seem to lean more to that type of social expression. That is how many became rap artists. The sad thing is the drug dealers also moved in and captured the youth right there. Young people need ways and means to express themselves. And not academically. Just emotionally. They are like lost sheep and need a Sheppard to lead them. And as the saying goes, the devil find work for idol hands.
I would therefore suggest the cabinet look in ways how to keep these youth engage and away from the demons that are trying hard to keep them in their grip. And at the same time the police need to come harder on drug pushers who are bringing it to our youth. Protect our children before you will have a much bigger problem. No many come out of the world alive
