The government of Antigua and Barbuda has introduced a demerit points system as part of its 2024 Vehicles and Road Traffic (Demerit Points) Regulations. This new system aims to promote safer driving practices and ensure compliance with road safety regulations.

Under the new framework, drivers who commit certain traffic offenses will accumulate demerit points on their driving record.

If an individual accumulates fourteen (14) or more points within a 12-month period, their driver’s license will be suspended for six (6) months.

Furthermore, if a driver accumulates eighteen (18) or more points within a two-year period, they will face a license suspension of one (1) year.

Offenses and Demerit Points

Traffic offenses are categorized by the severity of the violation, with penalties ranging from one (1) to five (5) demerit points.

Offenses that Incur Two (2) Demerit Points Each

Some of the offenses that incur two demerit points include:

  • Transporting hazardous materials or building supplies on specified roads within prohibited hours.
  • Failing to wear a seatbelt while driving or riding in the front passenger seat.
  • Driving a motor vehicle not equipped with proper lights or registration plates.
  • Operating a public service vehicle that does not comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Using a handheld mobile device while driving, in violation of the Vehicle and Road Traffic (Mobile Devices) Regulations 2019.

Offenses that Incur One (1) Demerit Point Each

Offenses that incur one demerit point include:

  • Parking or stopping within 30 feet of a corner or private road unnecessarily.
  • Failing to apply brakes or stop the engine when leaving a vehicle unattended.
  • Leaving a vehicle stationary on a road at night without parking as close as possible to the left-hand side.
  • Using a motor vehicle without displaying a sign approved by the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board.

Offenses that Incur Five (5) Demerit Points Each

The most severe offenses that result in five demerit points include:

  • Failing to move aside when being overtaken by other vehicles.
  • Overtaking other traffic without a clear view of the road ahead or when conditions are unsafe.

Promoting Safer Roads

The government hopes this demerit points system will lead to a reduction in dangerous driving behaviors and encourage drivers to take greater responsibility on the roads. The Traffic Commissioner has the authority to enforce these penalties and ensure that repeat offenders face consequences in the interest of public safety.

This system, part of broader efforts to update traffic regulations, reflects the government’s commitment to reducing road accidents and promoting responsible driving. By holding drivers accountable for reckless or negligent behavior, Antigua and Barbuda aims to create safer roads for all residents and visitors.

The new demerit points system is an important step toward improving road safety in Antigua and Barbuda.

Drivers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new regulations and drive responsibly to avoid penalties that could lead to license suspension or other consequences.

  1. Well y’all start to drive properly then maybe this wouldn’t happen look at all these accidents thats happen ..simple accidents it is ridiculous. Antigua is so flat . Places like Dominica have hills and no accidents like in Antigua

  2. So drive like an adult and prevent a demerit simple ,everything the government try to prevent accident you’ll always bitching out

  3. lol mercy Editor why you change the picture??? for SHOCK VALUE? lol the car is just relaxing, taking a break from touching the road! when u reach home dont u take off your shoes???

  4. Well done. It is the same rules and regulations that is applied abroad. So if we can adhere to them in other countries we can adhere to them in our own country. I have one question though!!!! Does the $500 and other amounts apply with these demerits?

  5. Wow!! Finally, F I N A L L Y.
It has been years since the demerit system was supposed to have been implemented. I know…..I was a member of the Board who discussed and put forward the idea. More than 15 years ago.
    Better late than never.
I hope this implementation will improve the statistics.

  6. Long overdue, because when you witness dangerous driving speeds, drivers overtaking 3-4 times in one maneuver, then you know that enough is enough.

The other day was a real first in my driving experience, when an out an out mad man overtook me on a roundabout 😡

It’s a good thing that I remembered what my European driving examiner told me when I got my driver’s license, to think that the person in front of you and behind is an out and out idiot driver.

His mantra has kept me safe to this date.

    Praise the Lord 🙏🏽

  7. I may have missed this years ago when learning to drive …I was not aware that I had to pull aside if someone was over taking me… or am I misinterpreting what was written. Can anyone clarify?

  8. Not a citizen of Antigua, but a broader question nonetheless: do the expansion of regulations also address the misuse of government vehicles (not referring to while on official duty), or emergency vehicles (again, not while responding to a legitimate emergency)?

  9. I hope the Police will start with all the mechanics who have taken over the sides of many roads and restrict the traffic flow. That is 18 demerits plus other charges.

  10. Yes you have to give the overtaking vehicle way. By pulling close to your side of the road and slowing down to allow the vehicle to pass safely. But you’re only allowed to do such once it’s safe to do and should hunk your horn 5 or more times in rapid succession when there’s obstruction or danger ahead to left the overtaking vehicle know it’s not safe to do such

  11. What they going to do about all the cars parked on the sides of the roads illegally which is choking traffic on a daily basis?

Road by Sandals and Royalton well jam up with employees parking on both sides of the road. Down by Blue Waters is the same shit. That road is now a one lane road because Blue Waters employees park on one side and both sides. The useless police don’t do shit about it. When someone lick into one a dem, it’s the driver’s fault. Add big ass holes in the roads to the problem.

Then you have people that park their cars outside their property on public roads like they own that spot. Since govt always a look money, start fining all them that park on the public roads with big fines. You get revenue and we get our roads back again. Antigua jokey no fuck.

This country has never been in such a deplorable state under previous govts.
