The government of Antigua and Barbuda will require all public sector workers to improve communication using the latest technology.

Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communications, told a Cabinet Press Briefing that poor communication remains a major challenge within government departments.

“Communication is not effective — in some cases it’s non-existent,” he said.

Merchant highlighted frustrations raised by Permanent Secretaries and Union Representatives about the lack of timely responses between departments.

“To function effectively, the system must overcome this challenge,” he added.

He confirmed that adopting innovative communication methods will become mandatory across government.

The move follows criticism of government inefficiency in the wake of the recent teachers’ strike, with ongoing talks between officials and stakeholders aiming for lasting solutions.
