  1. ONE THOUGHT OR TWO
Our Economic Wealth and Cultural Excellence of our Carnival Festivals!
Any reference to our Carnival Festivals MUST focus on the inextricable situation of our Economic/Financial Wealth and Cultural Excellence!

It’s not by chance then that “Antigua celebrated its first carnival in August 1957. The celebration served a two-fold purpose: It was a tourist attraction and a commemoration of emancipation from slavery………1 August 1834 slavery was abolished. People immediately celebrated by taking to the streets to celebrate their freedom and express their joy and happiness.”

The focus of celebrating A&B Carnival as “a commemoration of emancipation from slavery” has unquestionably diminished.
MAYBE unwittingly, but conveniently, the middle-class authorities looked askance at it after the era of the rise and fall of the West Indies Federation (breakup); the Status of Association with the UK (absurdity); the rise and fall of the Black Power movement ( the bludgeoning of Rasta); the rise and fall of the Grenada Revolution (US invasion); our political independence (incomplete); so that today we find ourselves celebrating only “The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival!”

Are we ashamed of our past history – slavery, colonialism, emancipation, incomplete political independence?
Are we trying to erase and forget our history and its negative effects on us?
There is a group of diehards, conscious and aware of the fundamental significance of our ‘Emancipation from slavery’ who separately but doggedly hold their annual celebrations at the same time – August.

Recently, the British people and their ‘colonial subjects’ celebrated joyfully the glory of the British Empire as in the coronation of their King! The British-coronation-carnival festivals were broadcasted to the World!
Europe is now propagating their lineage, splendor, glory, memories of their royal families!

Isn’t it time to refocus our Carnival celebration to include and reflect unabashedly at all levels of our education, “Emancipation from slavery” as in ‘Antigua & Barbuda Emancipation Carnival Celebration……The Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival?’
Also, it’ s time to re-energize ourselves to achieve economic/financial wealth with mental, spiritual, physical freedom!

The collaboration of the A&B Festivals Commission and UWI FIC as a ‘titled sponsor’ MUST be the foundation now for UWI FIC to draw on its vast capabilities to develop softwares to collect for the Commission real-time data on attendance, receipts and expenditures at the Festivals linked to geographic arrivals/departures – OECS, CARICOM, Int’l; imports/exports during the Carnival period.
From the data analysis the Commission can then target potential growth sectors for development within a technological framework of integrity, responsibility, accountability, transparency. A cost benefit accessible model of sponsorship can be marketed and promoted to the commercial sector.
UWI FIC also has the capability to develop Certified courses on Carnival costume designs, Arts, steelpan, calypso. Our cultural expressions of excellence are paramount!
So Antigua & Barbuda Festival Commission needs your help and support for our Economic/Financial Wealth and Cultural Excellence in our Carnival space!

Let us interact with humility, grace, good intentions! Be nice to each other!

Save our Humanity, Save our Youths, Save our Environment, Save our Soil!!!

    Respect
