Antigua and Barbuda has launched its 9th Annual Centenarian Week, running from 7 to 13 June, to honour residents aged 100 and over.

The observance, led by the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division, celebrates the lives and legacies of the nation’s 11 living centenarians—eight women and three men—including 104-year-old Hermina Celestine Joseph of Jonas Road.

Organisers say the week underscores the value of resilience, longevity and community support.

Events began on Saturday with a national Day of Prayer.

A media campaign on Monday, 9 June, is set to share the centenarians’ personal stories, with tributes and commemorative activities continuing throughout the week.

  1. Bake sale is nice, but the government should be funding elder care properly. These folks deserve more than charity. They’ve done years of community service!

  2. Such a beautiful way to honour our elders. These individuals helped build the foundation of our nation

  3. Beautiful People. Let us respect them and honour them. Don’t be like Jackie Quinn and call them “RAG TAG”. The Creator commands us to honour them.

  4. You see how Michael Joseph busy electioneering? If he gets power them same old people can’t see he again, he go busy flying and his armed police body guard will keep people away from him, colonial power devolve, so the minute you are elected you become diametrically oppose to the same people that elected you, you will have police guards keep them away from you and tear gas them and lock them up as the white colonials did.

  5. @Rovi. They are treated like RAGTAG right now. Why is Gaston refusing to pay them their pension? Waiting until election to pay them is cruel and demeaning.
