Antigua and Barbuda Businesses Urged to Transparently Display Prices with Increased Sales Tax

6

Businesses, including restaurants, are urged to transparently display item prices, incorporating the 17% Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST).

Orin Steele, Director of Prices and Consumer Affairs, emphasized the importance of preventing double charges to consumers due to the Antigua and Barbuda sales tax.

The recent 2% increase in ABST, effective from January 1, 2024, requires businesses to include it in displayed prices to avoid confusion.

Steele advised against excluding ABST and later charging customers separately. The government emphasized that certain items, such as fruits, vegetables, baby products, and medicines, are zero-rated and exempt from ABST.

The transition presents challenges for businesses adjusting shelf prices.

  1. I noticed while shopping at one of the largest supermarket yesterday that not only was there a price increase on items, I was also taxed on the items. This included items that are listed by the government as non-taxable.. How does the consumer know if an item (vegetables, fruits, meats are locally sourced or imported if it has no label to identify it’s source?

    • Did you really expect Barrett not to take the opportunity to increase his profits while there is confusion about the end price. I expect prices in Epicurean and his other supermarkets to increase by at least 10%. He’s one of the protected species on the island, breakfast with the political class, free dinner with the bankers

    • I recently observed that I was taxed on linguini and cream cheese even though I understand that cheese and pasta are non taxable. Probably the same place.

  2. The agency need to go and do investigation and which business place not following the proper guidelines should be published. Ppl struggling already and still they over charging not fair at all.

  3. No surprises here! What did consumers expect; the businesses were going to eat the 2% ABST increase?
Not only will the price of goods increase as well, the services performed by professionals will increase too.

  4. We are all conned as visitors. The true prices are never displayed in the bars and restaurants and it’s a shock when the bill arrives. Antigua has become too expensive, too much crime, and not a single beach without development. My grandparents were Antiguan and it is so sad to see.
