Efforts to modernize Antigua and Barbuda’s water infrastructure are underway as the government embarks on a critical re-piping project to combat persistent water shortages.
In the 2025 Speech from the Throne, Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams announced plans to replace outdated cast iron pipes with flexible polyethylene pipes, a move aimed at reducing water wastage and improving supply reliability.
“This re-piping exercise is essential for addressing long-standing issues in our water infrastructure, particularly in St. John’s. While we understand the inconvenience it may cause, we ask for the continued patience of residents as we work toward a sustainable solution,” Sir Rodney stated.
Currently, reverse osmosis (R/O) plants provide 8 million gallons of water daily, falling short of the 12 million gallons required to meet national demand. “Contracts for portable R/O plants are helping to bridge the gap, but prolonged droughts and aging infrastructure continue to present challenges,” Sir Rodney explained.
The re-piping initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the country’s water supply system and ensure resilience against future shortages.
In addition to water infrastructure, the government is considering establishing an independent sub-sea cable to reduce broadband costs and improve connectivity. Sir Rodney commended the Minister of Public Utilities for his leadership in driving this initiative. “Reliable broadband services are as critical as water in today’s world, and we are committed to enhancing both,” he said.
The Governor-General also paid tribute to the Honourable Sir Robin Yearwood for his 48 years of service in Parliament and his contributions to the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA). “Strong leadership is essential for the delivery of public utilities, and Sir Robin’s legacy serves as an inspiration,” he noted.
With these utility upgrades, the government is focused on meeting the demands of a growing economy and improving the lives of its citizens. Sir Rodney concluded, “Investing in public utilities ensures a future where Antigua and Barbuda can thrive amid evolving challenges, securing a brighter tomorrow for all.”
