The United States of America has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation and relations  with Antigua and Barbuda  and the rest of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

On the heels of the Flag Raising Ceremony at Chagaramus Tuesday morning, marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of CARICOM, Prime Minister Gaston Browne had a wide ranging bilateral meeting with Senator Christopher Dodd of the United States of America, Special Presidential Advisor for the Americas.

Prime Minister Browne applauded what he described as the warming and strengthening of relations between Washington and St. JOHN’S, which continues to strengthen under President Joe Biden.

“The US is a wonderful friend of the Caribbean, and you Senator are also a great envoy  of President Biden,” according to the Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister.

For his part, Senator Dodd said  that the Caribbean remains an area of special interest for the US ,which is underscored by the recent visit and engagement by Vice President Harris in the Bahamas.

Among  the wide-ranging issues raised during the bilateral talks include: the upscaling of LIAT to deal with regional transportation concerns;  reaching an amicable settlement on the long-running WTO gaming matter; Antigua and Barbuda’s desire  to be one of two countries selected by the US to reestablish an Embassy in the Eastern Caribbean, given our level of infrastructure, modern airport; being the fastest growing economy  in the OECS; US – China relations and Venezuela’s Petro Caribe initiative.

Both Prime Minister and Senator Dodd agreed to follow up on the matters discussed.

The meeting took place at the Hyatt hotel where the 45th Conference of Heads of Government is meeting to look at several key agenda items.

In the margins, Tuesday afternoon prior to the luncheon adjournment, the Heads received guests from friendly countries and international organizations to include the Peoples Republic of China, the Prime Minister of South Korea, and the Ambassador/Special Envoy of Mexico among others.

The Heads and senior officials also received a visit and extended greetings to former Secretary General Sir Edwin Carrington, who played a critical role in shaping the course of the Community over many years.

  1. America is the real deal stop settling for the knockoffs…The US is keeping a close eye at the Chinese relationships around the world and they’re trying to nudge them out….

  2. Christopher Dodd, left the Senate in 2011 and is ONLY a Special Advisor for the Americas, so his current position is in an ADVISORY capacity only.

Why Gaston Browne is treating this man as having MORE influence than he can actually achieve or muster is beyond any -right minded – independent thinking Antiguan.

    IS GASTON BROWNE NUTS?

    • … However, if Mr Dodds can somehow resolve, and then get President Biden to give the money that is owed/due to Antigua & Barbuda from the longstanding gaming situation, then I for one will put my hands up and say I’m wrong.

    • Brix, did the Prime Minister write the article and give it to ANR for publishing?
Do you know Mr. Dodd’s authority as part of the US Delegation?

  3. Gaston Browne looks tired and haggard. Did he lost weight? Enquiring minds would like to know.

  4. Former Senator Dodds maybe an advisor to President Biden, but when it comes to the issues Gaston raised, Dodds will pursue them only as a a paid lobbyist.
Unlike the Caribbean, US politicians don’t make their money while they are in office. Those who have done so or attempt to do so end up in j-a-I-l.
United States politicians make their money as lobbyist after they leave office.
Christopher Dodds ain’t doing anything for Gaston for free. Antigua will have to pay him to go to the White House and senior staff of the Chairman of each committee that handles the various matter Gaston has expressed he would like to get done.

Dodds will take up Gaston’s request, for as a Partner at Arnold Porter, his primary function is to be an “rain maker”
Gaston got the meeting with Dodds who may be eying some of the Alpha Niro funds, will become available soon. Dodds will get to work as soon as the retainer $$s hits Arnold Porter account.
