For the final day of the 2022 Carifta Games, national swimmers Ethan Stubbs-Green and Ellie Shaw earned themselves places back on the podium, with a silver medal for Stubbs-Green in the 400 metre freestyle (Boys 13-14), and a bronze medal in the 100 metre breaststroke (Girls 13-14), respectively.
These performances represent National Records, age group records, and personal bests from the two outstanding athletes. Stubbs-Green sailed to the silver with a time of 4:20.51, with 0.82 seconds separating him from Martinique’s first place swimmer Christophe Maleau, with a full 6 second separation from the pack.
Shaw motored her way to bronze with a time of 1:19.22, in a close 0.10 seconds separation from Martinique Cyrielle Manin. These spectacular performances mark the end of pool-based competition for the 2022 Carifta Games, with Stubbs-Green representing on April 21st in the 5k Open-water Races.
Shaw and Stubbs-Green are joined as finalists by Davina Barton, who placed 7th in the 400 metre freestyle finals (Girls 11-12), improving on her recently-set, personal best, entry time in a showing to be proud of. In the same distance, teammate Reuben Edwards roared to his own personal best time with a 10 second decrease of 5:05.31, earning a 6th place finish and a significant personal achievement (Boys 11-12).
Davien Barton powered his way to a personal best of 4:56.62 in a strong display of heart and discipline towards the end of his race (Boys 13-14). In the 50 metre freestyle, Tivon Benjamin and Ethan Stubbs-Green bettered their times by .37 seconds and .92 seconds, respectively, contributing to the fantastic achievements and heart shown by this team of athletes.
“There are no words to express how we feel right now,” President Marshall says. “These young people have worked so hard for so long. They’ve trained in the sea, they’ve tried to make up pool time, they have persevered in a way that very few people, adults or otherwise, are able to do, and it has paid off. As the President, I am incredibly proud of them. As an Antiguan, I am just so happy to see them out there, doing so well personally and on the podium. It’s amazing to see how resilient and disciplined our athletes have been, and I hope we can rally around them and bring them home. Obviously, we will all continue to work hard to support their future success; you can look at their results, you can see it in their faces, how much swimming and competing for their country means to them. They deserve kudos and every ounce of support we can muster as they movie forward to chase their dreams.”
This team showing is outstanding in Antiguan and Barbudan history. The young athletes of the Antigua and Barbuda National Swim Team have given their all for our country, demonstrating professionalism and the power of combining talent and an incredible work ethic in the face of adversity.
Coaches Wayne Mitchell and Nelson Molina are no less worthy of congratulations and praise, helming a large team through COVID protocols and multiple entries per day.
Molina and Mitchell have coached Antiguan and Barbudan athletes for years at the local and international level, and clearly demonstrated the value of their experiences and knowledge in guiding this team to results of unquestioned calibre.
