The Organization of American States has failed to reach an agreement on initiating an impartial investigation into the recent elections in Venezuela, which incumbent president Nicolas Maduro won.

The OAS election observation department had said earlier this week that it could not recognize the outcome reported by the country’s national electoral council declaring Maduro the winner of the contested vote.

The 35-member OAS then met to decide on and push for a resolution to begin the probe, but the motion did not garner enough votes- they needed 18 to pass the motion but only had 17.

Maduro’s stay in power

The incumbent assumed the role of interim president after Hugo Chavez died in March 2013, then won the presidential election held a month later by a narrow margin against opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

Maduro was re-elected in 2018 in a highly controversial election, which was widely criticized by international observers and opposition parties for alleged irregularities and lack of transparency

  1. I am not surprise that USA and Canada voted in favour to investigate. The question is, could the OAS even think of moving such a motion when it comes to election in either of those two countries?

What would help the people of Venezuela more is the lifting of sanctions.

  2. Exactly. We are supporting this man’s repression of his people and the suppression of the will of the majority. Shame on us! It’s like having a criminal for a friend, knowing he committed a crime and not saying anything. Shame!

  3. Antigua and Barbuda protecting their Petro Caribe deal and playing it safe with Comrade Maduro. Most pundits and political experts in and out of Venezuela and even ordinary Venezuelans in the country agrees that the opposition candidate won the election handsomely which was not even close.
Maduro is trying to solidify the reality of his election scam. He is trying to ensure that his fake and fabricated result becomes the fact on the ground. The Maduro regime has manipulated the results to ensure victory when in fact they lost heavily.
All those countries that abstained are literally singing for their supper.

  4. @Audley Philip The disappointment might come from the fact that certain countries did not get the leader they desire.

The leaders of the countries that abstained might be smart enough to realize it and refuse to toe the line. Venezuela is a oil producing country, why are they struggling so much? Do you believe that a fault of the leader there or is it a result of the sanctions that are placed on the country. In spite of the hardship that Venezuela faces, they still lend a helping hand to other developing countries.

Rather than calling for investigation, call for the removal of sanctions.

  5. The Antiguan government did the right thing, Venezuela sin is that Hugo Chavez nationalize the oil and take care of the poor and even the Caribbean territory, that’s how we get the discount on our bills at APUA and the food program at cmc for senior citizens, what else you harvested brain people who just think america is the truth and light, you regurgitate CNN and fox news propaganda, do you know that opposition would a just be a proxy leader to give American company all Venezuela oil and Guyana in the basket too, then nothing for Venezuela or the Caribbean, white people think you sin against them if they can’t take you assets or land resources, after all the Jews as they call themselves will inherit the earth. So you black self without any backbone or political ideology better back off of all who abstain from voting to destabilize Venezuela, wouldn’t you hide your valuables in your house from thieves at all cost? So too must Maduro hide our mineral resources from that puppet opposition who america is building false story about election not fair. If Hugo Chavez was alive he would win even greater, because the poor people love him for giving them the benifit of Venezuela assets.

  6. The same people that brought the story of Iraq’s WMD to the world are now bringing the story of Maduro stealing this election.
Those of you that KNOWS Maduro stole the election, show the rest of us your evidence. Also, do the Venezuelan people a favour –boycott everything that has anything to do with Venezuelan oil.

“The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the POWER to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power — Because they control the minds of the masses.”

  7. I am truly ashamed of the government of Antigua and Barbuda for this. You literally would turn away from potential corruption and tyranny because there is some benefit for you?

This would be the time an elected official support an investigation to show he truly won. That the election was free and fair.

I have lost more respect for all the countries listed above that did not support a simple inquiry into the vital process that provided a constitutional right to vote and pick your leaders.

Any administration that did not vote to show transparency for the people should not be in power. Thrraten me with death like you always do. I stand by this just like I stand by no government official should ever tell a citizen they cannot help them, especially in matters of national importance.

  8. Gaston Browne abstains, are you surprised.Venezuela comes every month bearing gifts to Antigua. There is something known as Petro-Caribe.Maduro is giving away to other Caribbean Nations. While the people of Venezuela are deprived of many things. That man like Gaston Browne would do just about anything to maintain power over the people.POWER TENDS TO CORRUPT AND ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY.YOU CANNOT TAKE IT WITH YOU UNDER 6 FEET OF DIRT OR IN AN URN.
