Anthony Smith: ‘I Thank God Every Day for Saving Me from the Wicked UPP Leadership’
All Saints West MP Anthony Smith has launched a scathing critique of the United Progressive Party (UPP), accusing its leadership of fostering division and political infighting. Speaking on Community Matters, Smith stated that he was “thankful every day” for leaving what he described as a toxic environment within the party.
“I thank God every day for saving me from the wicked leadership within the UPP,” Smith declared. “It was an environment filled with backstabbing, confusion, and a leadership driven by hate.”
Smith, who resigned from the opposition party to join the government as Minister of Agriculture, claimed that UPP leaders systematically alienated key members and punished those who did not align with their internal factions. He alleged that a culture of exclusion and hostility had led to the departure of several figures, including Dr. Mansoor and Damani Tabor.
“The same people who supported Richard Lewis for the leadership of the party are the ones being pushed out,” Smith said. “There is a deliberate effort to sideline those who don’t fall in line with the leadership’s agenda.”
Smith suggested that he was specifically targeted due to his perceived ties to the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), despite his years of work within the UPP. He accused party insiders of attempting to oust him long before his official departure, using intimidation tactics and public ridicule.
“They saw me as an easy mark,” he stated. “Suddenly, my so-called ‘Labour roots’ became a problem, even though they had no issue with it when I was investing my time, resources, and money into the party.”
The former opposition MP credited Prime Minister Gaston Browne for giving him the opportunity to continue serving the people of All Saints West. He praised the Prime Minister’s leadership style, contrasting it sharply with what he experienced in the UPP.
“Not only did the Prime Minister save my political career, but he positioned me to deliver real results for my constituents,” Smith said. “Unlike what I endured in the UPP, this government values progress and hard work over internal fighting.”

Anyone who has been given an opportunity to make progress in any walk in life, whether it be in education, business, or dear I say in Anthony Smith’s case, political acumen from being associated with the UPP (who don’t forget recognised his potential) before deserting the constituents that gave him the opportunity to represent them.
What must now really astonish his voters, is all the bad-minded and badmouthing he’s now doing to his former party that gave him the chance to represent All Saints West. This reeks of ingratitude and acting like a FOP or BARBERMONGER that has been urgently decked out by Gaston Browne.
Smith’s behaviour towards his former party and colleagues just doesn’t bode well – he lacks integrity.
LESS negative comments, and MORE action will save his political career in the long run.

This is coming from an independent member of the house. I dare you to resign right now and run either as an independent or as a member of the ABLP…seek a fresh mandate from the people of All Saints West. Otherwise keep quiet and show plenty gratitude for the party and the people who put you in parliament.

@Cheryl his experience with the leadership of the UPP, Pringle, Gisele Isaac and Wehner was very toxic. The leadership of the UPP is very toxic so he is not lying. Peter Reds can also confirm how he was treated by Gisele. That is a major problem with the UPP and until they learn to deal with disagreements and different views they will remain in confusion.

Smith, you are a hypocrite and a f! The only thing you thanking God for is the “life changing offer” from Gaston Browne to sell him your soul for $6 million in cash and government contracts. You said it yourself to several persons that that was the offered payment for your betrayal of the party that made you become a member of Parliament. Now the cook who treats the people’s treasury as his personal ATM will simply divert those millions of the people’s money to your own pockets. You talking about God?
