An election budget says Opposition Leader Spencer

The main opposition began its parliamentary response to the 2018 national budget on Thursday, dismissing it as an “election budget.”

The leader of the Opposition Baldwin Spencer told the debate in the Lower House today that the budget did not reflect the needs of the country.

“Instead what we got was an election budget,” Spencer, a former prime minister said.

He said the budget presented one week ago by Prime Minister Gaston Browne sought to deal with an election rather than the real issues.

“We got a budget crafted in deceit, wrapped in deception, with short-term inducements, that will lead to long-term hardship,” Spencer said.

The opposition leader said the economic indicators being relied on by the government had no real positive impact on improving the lives of residents.

“The vast majority of the working people cannot say that their lives have been improved since 2014 as a result of the per capita income and (economic) growth.”
