Amnesty Process going well after its first two weeks

Two weeks into the Amnesty programme currently being implemented by the government to regularize the status of scores of non-nationals living in the country, the Department of Immigration is reporting that the process has been going quite well.

The Department said it is quite satisfied with the process so far as it has been processing on an average 80 persons per day seeking to regularize their status in the country. The Amnesty hours are from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm Mondays to Fridays.

The Department of Immigration is reminding all persons seeking to access the Amnesty to ensure that they have the required documents in their possession. These are a completed application form, a passport, and a recent photo.

The Department has now introduced a ‘walk-in’ system alongside the system where persons make application to apply for the Amnesty. This is designed to speed-up the processing of applications. However, the Department notes that those wishing to access the service as ‘walk-ins’ must present themselves to the department by 1:00 pm on the day they wish to submit their applications for the process of registering their names. This will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For clarity, the Department is emphasizing the eligibility requirements for the Amnesty;

1. Persons living in Antigua and Barbuda for a minimum of four years but less than seven years, may apply for residency permit.
2. Persons residing in the country for more than seven years may apply for citizenship.
3. In both cases, applicants must not be absent from the country for more than six months at a time.

The Department is appealing to those wishing to access the Amnesty to adhere to these guidelines and to desist from showing up at the department earlier than the 1:00 pm start time for the registration of names. These guidelines have been established to avoid congestion at the department.

It must also be noted that whilst the Amnesty processing is ongoing, the Department continues to provide regular services to members of the public seeking extension etc.
