ALP Administration’s rental of ALP Headquarters
is conflict of interest, UPP says
The Leadership and Central Executive of the United Progressive Party (UPP) place on record their concern – and that of many conscious residents – about the use of “The People’s Place,” the headquarters of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP), by the Gaston Browne Administration.
These premises reportedly are being rented by Government schools for graduation exercises and, this week, were used by the Ministry of Education for a Principals’ Workshop.
Given that the Government owns other suitable properties – including the Harrison Centre, the Multipurpose Cultural Centre, the UWI – Five Islands campus, the John E. St Luce Financial Centre, and the National Public Library – the Party perceives such use of the ALP Headquarters by the ALP Administration as a conflict of interest meant to generate financial and psychological benefits for that party.
It is not lost on residents that the Browne Administration has deliberately allowed the deterioration of public property – such as the abandoned former Parliament Building – in an apparent bid to justify the rental of private premises owned by Cabinet cronies and front-men.
Further, it cannot be forgotten that, in the heart of the COVID-19 lockdown, when the Browne Administration could not pay its creditors and refused to grant stimulus/relief packages to vulnerable families and small businesses, the ALP Headquarters was being built at full speed
– even as the neighbouring NTTC Building languished, despite its purported $20 million refurbishment budget.
At present, the Dialysis Unit on the Holberton compound stands unfinished; the St. John’s Police Station is sliding into dereliction; the Deluxe Cinema remains as it was; the Sunshine Hub appears to have been abandoned; the Knuckleblock buildings are in dire need of repair; and the Tranquility Park Cemetery remains a virtual paddock – all while the Browne Administration spent millions on the upkeep of the Alfa Nero yacht and its associated legal expenses.
In short, while the public pays for rentals, its own assets are purposely allowed to deteriorate and depreciate.
The UPP condemns this sinister enrichment strategy of the Browne Cabinet and calls on all right-thinking citizens and residents to do the same.

Considering how cheap it is to rent People’s Place, I ain’t wrong the schools for using it. It costs 5x as much to rent John E. St Luce.
This is just one of many conflict of interests he who you all called some top dawg is associated with.

You are really a DUNCE. This is HOGWASH. UPP and members ,find intelligent things to comment on.. Sound so damn STUPID.
If there is no divestiture of parliamentarians remittances; such as to afford the general public transparency and accountability: then, there will always be the inference of corruption and malevolence attributed to the-powers-that-be.
This will always be a cause celebre; that is askance, and deemed worthy of answers. Thus, no one is innocuous or, above the law– wether in governance or, be it the common person under governance. Therefore, there must always be accountability rendered to facilitate the sure appearance of none complicity-that satisfy the query– should inquiring minds seek to know. For far too long, the governance operate as if the patrimony of the people is akin to the operation of a candy shop enshrined with artful self enrichment mantra, that benefits the clique and cronies beholden to the petty bourgeois; masquerading as quasi elites devoid of common sense- that is not common for the gullible partisans so entrenched as to think without thinking; that it is political party before country. Thus, the decadence of the society is a manifestation of the prevailing trend that supports the prostituting mentality so prevalent–as to be deemed worthy of emulating from the Top-Dawg; renting from self, to enrich same self; as a guise for austerity enhancement that benefits the public; for whom all things fall’s apart: And the buck stops where!?
Greed is one of the seven deadly sins and a Chinese proverbs concludes that those perpetrating greed will end up in prison.
ALP can do no wrong for the morons who support them, even when to someone with a grade 6 education can see the corruption.
Rest assured, Gaston Browne WILL be a civilian soon, the books will be opened( at least those that they don’t hide) and 1735 will be overrun with politicians, political prostitutes and civil servants who obey ministers and not the law.
Off course this is conflict of interest, but to the Labourites ANYTHING they do is right.
@jvfjw
All ur diatribe don’t make it right! Lest u forget: 2wrongs don’t make 1right. Math 102
This IS blatant corruption & Of course the rent will be less!!
Afterall during covid lock down, medical persons were hurriedly asked to assess the building nextdoor under the pretext of creating backup health capabilities while this Govt knew fully well that their buddies would be building this structure on the corner. The assessment made indicated that the building was not the preferred building of choice for the purpose of that healthcare crisus , but voilà….two buildings sprung up overnight
By his own admission, Gaston Brown sneaked and took the Moderna vaxx – ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT ( a leader does not sneak and leave his country and the front line workers behind ). Only protecting his preggo wife and himself mattered
Health care workers were dupped again and again and up to August 30, 2024, financial promises made were not kept and the ppl who ACTUALLY worked hard & risked their lives were overlooked
Monkey Pox …bring it on…wet u hand & wait world boss
Schools should be non-partisan. So, apart from any financial issues, it is not really appropriate for them to be using the political headquarters of a major political party to host any events…
If they can not use a building such as the Multipurpose Center then the schools can just use an open field or maybe the Botanical Gardens if big enough and bring along tents, add flowers/landscaping, tables and chairs etc. Would be quite lovely. Just watch the weather and pick a nice day…
Again an example of why this country was bankrupted by the UPP. Everything has a cost, even of it is a government building. And Multi Purpose and John St. Luce and not managed by Central Government. It cost between $6,000 and $10,000 to use the St. Luce facility depending on of you use the full room or half. The facilities have to be maintained, utilities have to be paid, staff have to be paid etc. The rent at the People’s Place is much cheaper so this makes economic sense. But the UPP would not understand financial common sense as they have none.
The government should have a dedicated non-partisan building or venue for hosting school events. There are many many schools and these events happen every year. It is very strange that they have to pay outsiders for such. If they are going to pay someone, couldn’t they use a community place with a better ambiance, a bit of nature etc. like the Cathedral Cultural Centre or the SJPC House of Restoration like they used to use? It is unsettling to have children graduating at a political headquarters.
To cut costs, a simple solution is to have a beautiful dedicated community venue built for events like this and then rent it out to the private sector for corporate events, weddings etc. whenever the schools are not using it. It will thus pay for itself and maybe even make a profit.
@ BRIXTONIAN
Am I reading correctly ? BRIXTONIAN is supporting ABLP ? You have seen the light. Welcome home my Comrade BRIXTONIAN. More to follow.
It is pelucidly clear that these Labourites have no clue what the hell conflict of interest is.
The workshops were organized by MOE,a division of government. The government owns several buildings with conference rooms. Why would they want to RENT an ALP facility ? Am I to believe that MOE has to pay to use a government facility?
The fact is, this self-enrichment thing is out of control. Greed has inflicted these ALP ministers like leprosy,as they try to steal from the government’s treasury.
Hey,but it’s what ALP has done from antiquity. Rent to benefit themselves and cronies.
The thievery continues
nice job Gisele’s UPP. highliting this “URGENT” topic will surely help to fix the INTERNAL ISSUES IN UPP. This will hand richard lewis the leadership, get rid of man cow and all who left UPP will come back to the party. Justin simon wont have to demand all MPs take a loyalty test. Serpent afraid to be strapped to a lie detector machine……so thank God talking about ablp will fix UPP shitty messy toxic environment that Cleon Athill, Anthony Smith and Chevaugh Smith and the young ppl had to run from. Congrats Gisele – you did it!!! UPP is perfect and ready again.
