Education Minister Hon Daryll S. Matthew is hopeful a planned meeting with the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers this afternoon will bear fruit.

Minister Matthew says he has written to the President of the Union Casroy Charles Jr to request a 1PM meeting after teachers threatened industrial action.

The proposed action follows repeated vandalism of public schools across the country and what the Union has cited as a failure of the Education Ministry to provide adequate security.

The Union in a letter dated and sent last Friday indicated if 24-hour security were not provided for schools by today teachers would not report for work on Tuesday.

In an interview on ABS News this morning, the Minister said he expects cool heads to prevail and that the Union will come to the meeting seeking a mutually beneficial outcome to the issue.

He cites ongoing communication with the Union to include a recent invitation of the Union to Cabinet as his Ministry’s commitment to alleviate the concerns of the teaching fraternity. (STATE MEDIA)

  1. This spate of vandalism of our country schools is totally unacceptable and the law enforcement officers need to deal with the perpetrators more seriously. I agree that the schools need security especially at nights and weekends, but it’s time the government deal with crime of any nature in a more harsher manner. These criminals need to be stopped by whatever means necessary.

  2. Has to be More Issues involved.
    Organize a Voluntary Security Unit
    Put Marchers to WORK 24/7
    Voluntary. Now..
    Protect Govt Valuables..

  3. Instead of threatening the teachers for demanding better security for themselves and their students, the Government should have focused their energies and spitefulness on protecting our children. Shame on you all!!

  4. Woiee Daryl sounded like a dunce this morning

He think he can tell people how Fu feel
The teachers don’t feel safe. The Clearview workers didn’t feel safe.
Fix the problem and stop saying stuff like it is unreasonable and it’s tax payer money
He nab min Kno a taxpayer money pay Fu all Dem minister ticket go Merica last month

Soon every single essential worker including the Clearview workers will put down Dem foot because of the attitude of these dam people in cabinet

  5. Children will not be left unattended at school tomorrow_ did l hear right
So who gonna attend to them at home?

  6. People were calling out for action on the spate of burglaries taking place in our schools, and it all fell on deaf ears until the letter was sent.

My word, and look how the government vex-up now?

And all they had to do at the time, was not only to reassure the teaching profession that they had noted their concerns, but also do something about it; and there wouldn’t be all this kerfuffle now. Simple really!

BEING PROACTIVE HAS ALWAYS BEEN BETTER THAN BEING REACTIVE …

  7. Why should you have to break into an education facility? Someone of one’s family must have benefited from one so why ?

  8. I see Gaston Browne’s warning not to take industrial action was all in vain. Just like he don’t listen to the people, the people nar listen to he. Vote him out now. Stop the creative enrichment scheme.

  9. I still cope with the loss of my then favourite teacher, Mr. Alvin Morris. Bless his soul and may he rest in peace.

He was murdered ON the AGHS school plant. I had to walk with other students bawling through town, to the church. We were not ok.

Does another teacher, maybe also staying back late to work, need to be murdered before the demands for safety be taken as…..reasonable??!

Come on man. Both teachers and students have had it hard during this pandemic, now also having to fear for safety?

WHY is this administration so high handed, bullish and rude….as a matter of instinct/first reply? Why all these threats and or else kinda vibes?

Is there no other and better way to talk to and treat aggrieved people.
They say who feels it knows it.

    • What a heartfelt and heartbreaking story @ Perspective. I too do not understand the aggressive response by the government when diplomacy, calm and action would have been much better.

Like you, I always remember the good teachers; and I have fond memories of my late departed English teacher … I wouldn’t be where I am today without her (she pushed me to express myself in the written word).

Rest In Peace Mrs Williamson 🙏

Our Prime Minister needs to have more respect for our teaching professionals.

  10. ABLP, it is your duty to protect the citizens, including teachers and students. You wasted $ 76 million on the ebooks that were dumped at Cooks.
You received $2 billion from the CIP.
Good gracious, why don’t you put people first instead of your own self enrichment!
    SICK AND TIRED OF YOU!

  11. I am voting for UPP because I don’t think People like Robin should still be running for a next term. However I think the Union is very wrong. The teachers during work time are full secured. It is during the nights these stuff are happening when the police and army take over from the private secretary company. No teacher or student are in danger. Senseless Strike.

  12. I hope that the teachers will remember this day, when the Common Entrance Exams results are not satisfactory amongst the government schools. Playing politics with our children is very irresponsible.

  13. Playing with the lives and safety of our children is very irresponsible. That is what the ABLP is doing. But then again, The ABLP is does not care
