In light of the press statement issued by the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers (A&BUT) on Sunday evening of continued industrial action, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Creative Industries hereby informs parents and guardians that all classes scheduled for Monday 12th May, 2025 are canceled at public schools throughout the country and children should remain at home until all outstanding matters with the A&BUT are settled and notice of resumption of classes is issued.

Security was at the forefront of the Ministry’s decision to have students remain at home.

The closure of schools does not extend to public school teachers, who must continue reporting for duty.

Additionally, there will be no disruptions to CSEC examinations that are being administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council.

  1. One big dutty chupz, security after a whole week, just give me an aspirin. Ask for an audience with the teachers and stop the seesaw

  2. Then why you all don’t leave teaching if you all hate it so much. Why punish the children. Some of you all not doing any work. Look at the passes. You all just giving the children assignment and not doing no work in the classroom. Gaston should bring in Teachers from other Caribbean countries.

  3. It’s very easy for persons who are not affected to have an opinion. As a teacher, at a public school I can confirm that more than 50% of the children do not want to learn or be in school based on their own sentiments. With universal secondary education, we now have to have readers for some students taking CSEC, something that wasn’t happening 18 years ago when I did CXC. To conclude, I would like to ask the people of Antigua to ask and answer themselves honestly; would you continue to work happily and diligently if your employer owed you more than $20 000 and the balance continues to increase by $500 each month? Would you put feelings of distrust aside and go back to work after numerous failed promises to pay? Would you find the selfless discipline to teach the ever growing list of disrespectful students while struggling to make ends meet and the constant rejection from financial institutions for a mortgage on the premise that you can’t afford it? More than likely the answer is no for all of the above if the person had half a conscience.

    Togetherness for progress!

  4. These Rugrats ain’t learning anything anyway, put them on farms to grow food for the nation.

  5. Pure rubbish. No one is indispensable. Surely the old fruits can be replaced. I am sure not every teacher is happy about this. One man is leading the people astray. Will the real Hitler please stand up

  6. Did i expect any better than this? What Gaston has to say about that? How is the government hiding from this?

  7. I hope in the future that one of the requirements when commenting in forums such like this and online is that persons would be required to attach their correct names. Let’s see how proud or how shame they are of their comments. More so, if their comments are just designed to cause caios rather than to resolve. Why would I post something on a matter as important as this subject, and sign anonymous or a nickname. Stop hiding in the dark and stand up for what you believe in. Well, if it is that you truly believe what you write. Patrick Barrymore Simon

  8. In the new dispensation an effective method of evaluating teachers’ suitability for the job/continued employment/promotions, awards etc. should be introduced. It MUST include a section which accommodates the input of PARENTS/GUARDIANS and equally important, the INPUT of the STUDENTS themselves, on whose behalf millions of taxpayers’ dollars are spent annually paying “teachers” whose skill sets might be better suited for farm work or, like their mentor, in the collection and disposal of dead dogs and other waste disposal. The present crop are a total disgrace to the profession!
Parents, please ensure the safety of your children especially during this unholy, immoral, extended vacation period huffed by these hucksters! They must be our sole priority.

  9. Sad that the students will suffer the most but the parents can play their part too. Help your children with their learning and put the fetes down a little bit. I honestly hope the teachers get what’s truly theirs.

  10. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Imagine teachers were engaged in a sit in and students were still receiving work by WhatsApp etc. Today, students were sent work from even before school started, but we are heartless. You will never hear some parents talk about that. I bet tomorrow some will be without a pencil, pen, sharpener, exercise book… but teachers who are heartless will give to them. Some comments are by far in my opinion unfair.
If parents and other members of society knew the struggle they won’t make some remarks. Report cards since first term are still waiting to be picked up, two scheduled P.T. meeting and no show for many parents. No visits have been made to the school for the school year thus far, but teachers…A parent cursed out a teacher because the teacher explained that the child is reading at a grade one level in grade 6. The parent blamed the grade 6 teacher. This teacher has given this child extra classes to assist with his reading and provided materials for the child to use in class, but the teacher…
I Wish there was a law in place that held parents responsible for not providing adequate supplies, not collecting reports, not attending P.T. meetings, not visiting their child’s teacher(s) at least once a year, not paying for damaged books so that their child/children can have their copy during class time.

On another note, teachers will be blamed but blame parents too. If there are teachers in the system who are not working, the M.O.E. should do something. They fully know who these persons are since evaluations are done yearly. The incompetence comes from the Ministry. They hire persons. An interviewee cannot give themselves the job. My sister went to teacher training a few years ago and came home one day and said that her lecturer said that he marked some papers and the errors in spelling and grammar which he had to correct were atrocious. So, yes, blame the Ministry for hiring. Blame the teachers if they fail to produce but blame the parents too.

  11. Teachers need to resume work and stop playing politics and playing God with your children education enough is enough nonsense
