Alfa Nero Sold for US$67.6 Million as Emergency Injunction Denied

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt bought the Alfa Nero superyacht that was ditched in Antigua in March 2022 after Russian troops invaded Ukraine.

The billionaire “won the auction this morning in a fully transparent process,” buying the vessel for $67.6 million, according to Sir Ronald Sanders, Antigua’s ambassador to the US.

The US Treasury last year named Russian fertilizer billionaire Andrey Guryev as the owner of 267-foot Alfa Nero, which he denies. It went to auction this month after Treasury removed the abandoned ship from its sanctions list.

A request for comment sent to Schmidt’s foundation wasn’t immediately returned.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimates Schmidt’s net worth at $25 billion.

Port Manager Darwin Telemacque spoke to reporters following the sale.

    • @ Shassy, this sale looks like it may come back and bite Antigua big time in the future – I hope I’m proved wrong.

      Everyone is currently patting each other on the back (mind you $67.6 million dollars will do that!), for an auction that has got the ABLP juices going.

      In the meantime, I’ll be interested to know if the proceeds of this sale will be made clear to all Antiguan citizens, and accountable as to where, how, and what the money will be spent on to benefit the country as a whole.

      Remember, we are still awaiting financial clarity on the monetary use of NAMCO and CIP funds.

      Will the same UNACCOUNTABILITY be hidden from us with the Alfa Nero proceeds?

      Hopefully, this doesn’t turn out to be a PYRRHIC victory for the government …

  13. The UPP are a bunch of visionless baboons. They said it couldn’t be sold, the US would never lift the sanctions, the Russians were too powerful leave it in the harbor to rot or perhaps break away from the moorings and damage other yachts in the area during a hurricane.
    If ever we could get it sold let’s send the money to Ukraine.
    This is who the Antiguan people actually feel is a better alternative to sound, fearless leadership.

  19. I’m satisfied that the administration had the vision and foresight to go to parliament to make this and future transactions of this kind legally possible.

    It requires a certain level of experience and expertise to possess this level of thinking.
    We cry down the administration when things look questionable. I accept that the opposition has its job to do.
    Now is the time to step up to plate in support of this accomplishment. It will only benefit the economy of our country.

    Out of 20 bidders, it came down to the top three. His offer was the most lucrative.

    $67, 600,000 US x the bank exchange rate(2.71) = $183,196,000 EC

    A: Invest it in a global fund, earning a safe 10% return per year.
    = $18,319,600 EC annually to the treasury. But can reinvest some to grow the principal.
    (Treat it like an endowment where the principal is neve touched unless the people voted on it every 20 years.)
    B: Distribute all of it to the citizens to boost the economy = $1,831 per person (approx. 100k ppl)
    C: Put it in the treasury and do business as usual

    If I was the PM, I would do option “A”.

    Now to the politics part.
    If I was in opposition, rather than come up with negative things about the sale, my speech in parliament would be this:
    Yes, let’s sell the __king Yacht! That’s good cheese for our struggling treasury. But we the opposition will be pausing for or be part of a new committee to track every penny of that loot.

    But if option “A” is implemented then this would do wonders for Antigua for many many many many years to come.

Well I will be listening for pay rise and the elderly can get their pension money.
