A Chinese national by the name of Tianzhao “Alex” Feng has been sentenced to 1 year and 2 months in prison for setting fire to XPZ Supermarket in 2021.
Feng, who was previously employed by the company located on Sir Sydney Walling Highway, admitted to committing arson in the High Court on February 17.
The sentencing, originally scheduled for March 21 before Justice Ann-Marie Smith, was delayed and took place today.
Feng was taken into custody and charged shortly after the building was engulfed in flames in the early hours of June 1, 2021, as he could not be accounted for at the time.
He appeared in court later that month, and his bail was denied due to concerns that he may flee the country.
He has been held at His Majesty’s Prison since then.
The destruction of the supermarket had a minor impact on the local economy, resulting in the loss of employment for numerous individuals.

Black Antiguans at one time owned most of the supermarkets in Antigua. Now you see supermarkets all over the place owned by non native Antiguans. What happened to all the black Antiguan businesses?
Allegedly, some local businesses are no longer there because they offer credit to the government and other statutory bodies for schools craft and home economics programmes, stationery and cleaning supplies and they have not being paid upfront.

@Man on the sea – Do you make a conscious effort to patronize local establishments? Remember nobody has a gun to your head when you spend your money. I can’t verify this but I was told that XPZ supported a lot of local businesses, especially produce so we need to be careful with the broadbrushing.
When reality hits it always boil down to who have the lowest price.

@Mr Byam…IMO that is a hateful comment. You may not be aware but Alex was apparently a slave/indentured servant belonging to the owners of XPZ. Credible word said that Alex was beaten for having a black girlfriend and he apparently had the bruises to show when he was arrested. It was also said that Alex could not take the constant abusive treatment anymore which prompted him to commit the crime. If Alex were to be sent back to China it is likely that he would be “exterminated” Chinese “disappearance” style. China’s vile and vicious racism, reputation for inhumanity and using slaves is well known worldwide.
I hope Alex can ultimately be protected and wish him well for his future.
Then he should go back to China with his kit and kin, not burn down half of St. Johns. Criminals are criminals; we’re not interested in sob stories.
