SOURCE: REAL NEWS ANTIGUA-Public schools have just reopened following an extended Easter Break, and at least one secondary school has taken the decision not to continue with classes for the remainder of the week during the Teachers Union-led industrial action.
Government-school teachers across the country commenced industrial action today, April 17, when schools were reopened after an extra four vacation days.
A sit-in, to begin last Tuesday, April 11, had been planned.
Now, in a letter to parents dated April 17, the principal of the Antigua Grammar School, Sam Roberts, reminds parents of the industrial action being taken by the teachers, with the consent of their bargaining agent, the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers (A&BUT).
Since most teachers at the Grammar School are members of the Union, Roberts writes, the school will not be able to conduct classes.
Additionally, he says, the school will not be able to provide the adequate supervision required for the students at this time. And he is unable to give parents any assurances as to when the industrial action will end.
Appeals have been coming from Education officials, including Minister of Education Daryl Matthew, imploring eachers to return to the classroom with some urgency. They note that CSEC examinations and the Grade Six National Assessment will be conducted in a few weeks.
However, the teachers say they are resolved to withhold their services until their demands are met, since Ministry of Education officials continue to disrespect them.

I was hoping that this industrial action would have been resolved by now. However it is best in my view that the teachers continue their strike action until every thing that was agreed upon is completed. Yes it is hard on the parents but if the teachers go back to school and have to strike again they will find themselves on the wrong side of public opinion.
Today I heard Nurses giving the Government a serious ultimatum. The nurses have been crying out for the past few years even louder and more painful than the teachers. Just Before the pandemic the head of the nurses because a very well known because of the issues. The nurses rolled up their sleeves and but their grievances aside and went to work. The ministry of Health had ample time to address the nurses issues, especially after the efforts they displayed during the pandemic.
Similarly the health care workers at Clare View , Fiennes and prison officers at 1735 have all been crying out . Today on the radio I heard A lawyer mentioned about the deplorable state of the prison again. Guys in government please note that some of the crimes you have committed against Antigua and Barbuda might land you in 1735 ( Antigua Airways a recent one ) . That building at Yasoso corner is far worst than George Walter going to prison for the steel frame. The money’s spent on NTTC Nugent avenue and remember that when Black Hadee… Baba black sheep get in the pen . He is going to bawl. Kool Run away George is back and collecting millions and sponsoring and have the stupid picky head people crowning them for not being too greedy and giving back crumbs.
This administration cannot last out 2023.
