The late Corporal of Police, Clifton Common

The Ministry of Legal Affairs and Public Safety, under which falls responsibility for the Royal Antigua and Barbuda Police Force, expresses its condolences to the family of Police Officer Corporal Clifton Common, who was killed by a prisoner while carrying out his duty.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Honourable Steadroy Benjamin, speaking on behalf of his Ministry, the Cabinet, and the people of Antigua and Barbuda, conveys his sympathies to Mrs. Common and family, and to the entire membership of the Police Force.

Corporal Common is the only homicide victim in Antigua and Barbuda during this New Year. “He did not deserve this fate,” the Honourable Steadroy Benjamin remarked; “he was carrying out his duties and was remarkable as a police officer.” His colleagues describe him as supportive, very well-liked, and always willing to help. He never complained but worked diligently at all times.

The Criminal Investigation Department will gather the evidence required to ensure that the accused is prosecuted swiftly for this killing, and that justice is administered fairly.

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda, through the Cabinet, will make an announcement concerning the treatment to be accorded the fallen officer, his wife and child. The generosity of the people of Antigua and Barbuda will surely be applied to these sad circumstances surrounding Corporal Common’s death.

May his family be comforted by the outpouring of love which has encompassed Corporal Common following the tragic incident. May his soul rest in perpetual peace.
