Antigua AG says bad drivers will have their licenses suspended

Attorney General Benjamin Calls for Stricter Driving Standards in Wake of Alarming Traffic Incidents

Attorney General Steadroy Cutie Benjamin addressed growing concerns about road safety, urging immediate action to address the rising number of accidents caused by reckless driving. Benjamin emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the driver’s licensing system and proposed measures to enhance road safety.

“If you look at your Facebook, you’d have seen an action someday, and by these traffic incidents, we’re going to look at these people who drive as though the lamp posts have been moved from the side of the road to the middle of the street,” stated Attorney General Benjamin.

Expressing his disbelief, he added, “I can’t understand in any way how you can be riding a motorcycle alone, run off the road, slam into a post which is 6 feet from the street, or driving a motor car with nothing on the road, only to turn over and get smashed up.”

Attorney General Benjamin highlighted the urgent need to reassess the process of issuing driver’s licenses, stating, “We have to look at dealing with who gets driver’s licenses. This can’t continue anymore. We have to make the tests stronger.”

He proposed the implementation of a pen system, which would scrutinize the driving history and patterns of individuals prone to accidents.

“We’re going to have to get some pen system going, but when you are prone to have accidents, you’re prone to get your license removed. So we are going to do that too,” Benjamin affirmed. The Attorney General stressed that this measure is crucial to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians on the streets.

The announcement comes in the wake of a series of alarming incidents involving motorcycles and motor cars, prompting concerns among the public and law enforcement agencies. The proposed reforms aim to address the root causes of these accidents and reduce the overall risk on the roads.

While the specifics of the proposed pen system and strengthened testing procedures were not detailed, Attorney General Benjamin reassured the public that the government is committed to implementing robust measures to curb reckless driving and make the roads safer for everyone.

The Attorney General concluded by urging citizens to be vigilant on the roads and follow traffic regulations.

“We all share the responsibility of ensuring road safety. Let us work together to prevent unnecessary accidents and protect lives,” he emphasized.

  3. The AG is always making a fool of himself. This experience government is the most reactive ever. There is nothing wrong with the process of obtaining a drivers license in Antigua. In fact it is made too difficult and the age limit etc is strict. What is wrong is the legal system. The enforcement of laws and lack of police patrols with proper computerized modern day equipment.

  4. Look at for example a gentleman hit and run on oil refinery road , speeding. One young man with such a bright future life was taken- studying to become a medical doctor. Can you imagine you son away at medical school and you received that call? His girlfriend left with dismembered body parts,disabled- she too studying to become a doctor . Note this driver fled the scene of the accident. To date the case is being dragged in the so call court of law.
A young lady was driving on Roman Hill área . A a teenager boy swayed into her path. He was hit accidentally and died. I heard it from people that were there saying it was unavoidable from the driver’s standpoint. She was sea dragged into court and treated like a dog by the legal system. The last time I heard she was awaiting sentencing- condolences to the family of the teenage and I know you feel like you need justice. However this from all appearances was an accident and you should ask the court to be leniency for the young lady.

  5. The AG seems to filled with more hot air & very little action…. Is this another ” sweet sounding nothing ” uttered from him? Let’s watch & see!!

  6. Suspending ones drivers license DO NOT PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING BEHIND THE WHEELS OF AN AUTOMOBILE….HOW ABOUT IMPOUNDING THE VEHICLES OF RECKLESS DRIVERS, INCREASING FINES , INSTALL CAMERAS ON ROADWAYS AND INTERSECTIONS KNOWN TO BE ACCIDENT PRONE ?

PLENTY PEOPLE IN ANTIGUA 🇦🇬 A DRIVE WITH ” NO ” LISCENSE SO SUSPENDING DRIVERS LISCENSE HAS NO EFFECT ON THE AMOUNT OF ACCIDENT. ” CUTIE BENJAMIN “

    • Maybe putting names of persons with suspended driver’s licenses on Facebook may help. Some people might respond to “name and shame”
