AG Benjamin Pushes for Tougher Gun Laws Amid Surge in Violent Crime

Amid a rise in gun violence, Attorney General and Public Safety Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin is advocating for stricter sentences for firearm offenses.

Benjamin expressed plans to bring this issue to magistrates, emphasizing that while he cannot dictate judicial decisions, he will highlight community concerns.

The government has already moved to strengthen penalties in Parliament, allowing for fines and imprisonment for those convicted of gun crimes.

This shift follows reluctance among some judges to impose harsh sentences on first-time offenders, despite legal backing, a stance supported by a regional precedent upheld on appeal.

Additionally, the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court introduced Sentencing Guidelines in 2019 to standardize penalties across its jurisdiction, covering offenses from firearms to sexual crimes.

The Attorney General assured the public that measures are being taken to address the spike in crime, including increased police resources and enhanced customs security to intercept illegal firearms.

Amid these efforts, recent violent crimes, including the stabbing of 17-year-old Omarrie Graham and the shooting of 24-year-old Kevin Vaciannie, underscore the urgency of these measures.

Sir Benjamin also mentioned a $10,000 reward for information leading to the resolution of these cases, urging public cooperation with law enforcement.

  1. Sir Benjamin please also include in your proposal the issuing of license to law abiding citizens so they can defend themselves from these hooligans

  2. Now make it easier for business owners and law abiding citizens to apply for a firearm. If they knew that there could be a gun behind every door they break down they wouldn’t do it!
