Prime Minister Gaston Browne has said that his three-year-old Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) administration has already made the case for five more years in office.

On June 12, 2014, Browne led his ABLP to a resounding 14-3 victory at the polls, over the United Progressive Party administration.

Browne, who is also Minister of Finance, has said that stabilizing the economy alone is enough to guarantee another victory for his party.

“The country was literally bankrupt. In fact, we were on a rescue mission,” the Prime Minister said in a live radio broadcast to give account of his stewardship to date.

He said the rescue mission involved saving “bankrupt” statutory corporations, making good on delinquent payments to the International Monetary Fund, improving the Gross Domestic Product and reducing unemployment.

But he said “stabilizing the banking sector ranks among our best contributions to date”.

“Just by virtue of that fact that we have restored stability and sustainable growth, that alone would justify re-electing the labour party to govern this country,” the ABLP leader said.

And the prime minister has told the nation that the country’s economic situation is about to improve even further with “a significant number of projects that are coming on stream”.

Among these projects are a US$ 90 million re-development of the port and a separate US$ 80 million for a 5th cruise pier for Oasis class ships.

He said more investments will take place in renewable energy “and later this year we will spend another US$ 15 million to install another seven megs of solar and wind energy”.

The Prime Minister also announced a new medical school to begin operations here soon.

But he admitted that some residents are not aware of the projects ongoing under his labour party administration, which helped bring unemployment down from 14 to 11 per cent.

The ABLP planned a series of activities this week to observe its third year in office.
