Accreditation Council Expected To Approve UWI Campus Next Week

The government says Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, was invited to Cabinet to announce the pending decision of the Accreditation Council.

The Fourth Landed Campus of the University of the West Indies—the Five Islands Campus—is to be approved when the Council next meets in two weeks,” a statement from Cabinet said.

The amount required annually, the Council will determine, is likely to be met by the Antigua and Barbuda authorities; the infrastructure is also in place to meet the tailored financial capabilities.

“The bachelor degree will be offered during the first three years of the Fourth Campus’ operations; thereafter, the master’s degree and the PhD will be added for certain disciplines. Antigua and Barbuda is therefore at a historical moment in providing tertiary level education to the citizens of the OECS,” according to notes from Cabinet.

Fifty-three years ago, the Vice Chancellor reminded the Cabinet, the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados commenced operations; it was then the UWI’s intention to ensure that another campus to serve the Leeward + Windward Islands would be established shortly thereafter.

Five decades have since elapsed. However,  the government insists that Antigua and Barbuda is better prepared than Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados were when campuses were established on these territories.

“Antigua has a main campus site that is far superior to what existed in these other territories at the time of their placement, and the number of students readied for tertiary education is also now superior.”

The discussion also focused upon staffing, meeting student satisfaction, building sporting facilities, and approaching friendly countries for assistance with expanding the university; these topics were also addressed by the Cabinet and the Vice Chancellor.
