ABWU Launches Groundbreaking Digital Membership Portal ‘ABWU Connect’
The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) ushered in a new era of service and connectivity on Wednesday with the official launch of ABWU Connect, a comprehensive digital membership portal aimed at revolutionizing how union members engage with their organization.
The launch ceremony, held at the ABWU headquarters, marked a milestone in the Union’s 50-plus year history, introducing a suite of user-friendly digital tools designed to provide members with unprecedented access to services, benefits, and information.
“This is more than just a website. It’s a bold leap into the future of trade unionism in Antigua and Barbuda,” said General Secretary Senator David Massiah, who hailed the initiative as a reflection of the Union’s commitment to innovation and member empowerment.
“ABW Connect is about improving the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of the services we provide.”
Through the portal, members can now:
- Book appointments directly with their union officers;
- Access case updates in real time;
- Review collective bargaining agreements;
- View employment opportunities;
- Receive updates on upcoming events and union news;
- Contact the Union’s in-house legal department for discounted services;
- Join youth and women’s councils; and
- Explore member discounts at various local businesses.
Deputy General Secretary Chester Hughes, who spearheaded the project’s development, delivered a detailed demonstration of the portal and emphasized its transformative potential.
“This portal eliminates excuses—on both sides. There’s no reason a member can’t reach their officer, and no reason an officer can’t respond,” Hughes said.
“This is transparency in action, accountability in practice, and empowerment through technology.”
He further announced a post-Labour Day roadshow to introduce the portal at workplaces island-wide, encouraging new memberships and helping existing members get online.
The platform was developed by local software engineer Kenley Browne, who was praised for his expertise and long-term commitment. Brown shared that the system—developed using modern, open-source technologies—is already garnering interest from regional unions for its pioneering approach.
“The Union put its trust in local talent, and we’ve delivered something that’s not only functional but groundbreaking,” Brown said. “This is the first of its kind in the OECS.”
ABWU President Kem Riley officially declared the portal live, counting down alongside hospitality workers—the union’s largest sector—who were specially invited to witness the launch.
The Union also revealed future plans to expand ABW Connect’s features, including push notifications for meetings and alerts for job openings, as well as a new online talk segment called The Lunchtime Line, offering live discussions on current labour issues.
“This is your union. This is your future,” Messiah told members. “Together, we are shaping a stronger, smarter, more connected ABWU.”
Members can now access the portal at membership.abwunion.com using their union-issued membership cards.
