“Empower Workers, Transforming the Workplace for the Future” was the theme for the Antigua and Barbuda Trade Union Congress (ABTUC) Anniversary Workshop held last week.
Dozens of affiliate members of the umbrella body turned out for the two-day session which was designed to build capacity at both the institutional and individual level.
Day one brought together the TUC’s General Council to deliberate revisions to the Organisation’s constitution, with assistance from Suzan Jarvis – a legal drafts person within the Ministry of Legal Affairs.
Day two gave TUC members an opportunity to enhance their knowledge on a range of issues that impact individuals, workplaces and the wider community. Topics and facilitators included:
- Disabilities and Accommodations in the Workplace – Dr. Dwasi Tonge
- Climate Change: Protecting Our Own Space – Colin Jon-Jenkins
- Cybersecurity: Protecting Sensitive Information in the Workplace – Donte Walter
ABTUC President, Kem Riley said: “This workshop underscores the TUC’s commitment to develop its general membership and to improve the organisation’s ability to support its affiliates.”
Participants responded positively to the sessions, with one attendee highlighting the impact of Dr. Tonge’s presentation on workplace accommodations for persons with disabilities. “We need to go back and speak to our policymakers and advocate for change so that we can have a fairer environment for all persons.”
The ABTUC comprises six affiliated unions: Antigua Barbuda Public Service Association, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union, the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers, the Antigua and Barbuda Nurses Association, the Guild of Antigua and Barbuda Air Traffic Controllers (GABATCO) and Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Association.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is quite possibly one of the most irrelevant and useless organizations in this country.
It seems to me that when it was formed the idea was to create a quasi-cartel whose main goal would have been to be complicit with the failings of the UPP. The AT&LU saw through the chicanery and decided to part company with the TUC when the organization failed miserably to stand on principles in the face of the UPP’s discriminatory practices against perceived ABLP supporters in the government service. Even the ABWU started to recoil from the TUC at some point.
The development of industrial relations environment and political history make an organization such as the TUC redundant and ineffective. The leaders of this organization need to come to this realization and stop wasting their time.
The Trade Unions need to be more involved in the wellbeing of the workers.
While the salaries are on the increase for those in the hierarchy and their associates, & nepotism is on the increase, there are many employees at the lower end who are stagnant in a position for many years and not a voice is heard for their interest.
