ABPSA Issues Guidelines For Civil Servants Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

The Antigua and Barbuda Public Service Association (ABPSA) wrote to the Hon. Minister of Social Transformation and Human Resource Development with recommendations to try to assist Civil Servant in dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ABPSA was subsequently invited by the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda to hold discussions and agree on measures to protect the health, safety and welfare of all Civil Servants and their families.

Consequently, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has issued a document captioned “Guidelines for Public Sector Employees and Statutory Bodies re COVID-19 Response” dated 20th March, 2020.

The ABPSA would like to register its support for these guidelines and will continue to recommend to the Government other measures that may be taken in response to this pandemic.

Therefore, the ABPSA is encouraging ALL Civil Servants to follow the guidelines issued by the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda for Public Sector Employees and Statutory Bodies Re: COVID- 19 Response and also any guidelines from the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment.

THE ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA PUBLIC SERVICE ASSOCIATION WOULD LIKE TO CALL ON ALL CIVIL SERVANTS TO ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING:
 NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.  Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches, elevator buttons, etc.

 Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.

 Open doors with your closed fist or hip – do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.

 Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.

 Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.

 Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home’s entrances, AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can’t immediately wash your hands.

 If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more

 If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early – do not visit any health facilities call by phone first.

  1. Why not stop flights from the UK and the USA? Antigua will not survive a crisis of the virus. It is terrible here in London and the UK. At least we have the wonderful NHS. Health before Money? Please look after yourselves.

    • This is a serious pandemic… The govt & health authorities are doing good job so far….. Shutting all ports may be the best course of action but the conseus of the different stakeholders indicated to have the ports open due to the negative effects it will have on country….. I am hoping that those who are monitoring those persons at the ports are properly protected and their jobs are done with great diligence…. We cannot afford a catastrophe of losing lives from that Covid – 19 virus from not being responsible
