Prime Minister Gaston Browne says a decision has been taken by Cabinet to wipe-off electricity debt for all residents.

He says the measure will come into effect in a matter of weeks although the exact date is still to be announced.

Browne spoke on his weekly radio programme earlier today on Pointe FM.

“People who have no electricity, we are reconnecting you,” the ABLP leader announced.

A similar measure was announced during the campaign for the 2018 general election.

  1. Not saying that it isn’t a great political move but…no money for security in schools—but millions salary increases and for delinquent electricity accounts…?

    • @ ‘Just Saying’

All of a sudden , where the money gonna come from now? You liked to question where the money gonna come from for UPP’s programmes, where is it gonna come from now?
People will be penalised with HIGH WATER BILLS AFTER THE ELECTIONS, GASTON ALREADY PROMISED AND WARNED US THAT THAT WILL HAPPEN.

    • This is a move that will backfire. God nah sleep littyk
It shows the scant regard that GB has for people. I hope the rest of the AfricanAmerican complexion cabinet was not a part of this decision.
It’s a move geared towards the campaign funders who have 3million dollars in arrears The people of Perry bay will benefit to the tune of 10dollars on average, but the store at Perry bay will benefit greatly

  2. Come on stop taking us for fool please. When people needed that assistance during covid why it wasn’t given. Oh lord stop it please am speaking to all you politicians stop using us when election coming.

  3. After elections pass and APUA need back their outstanding money who you think gonna pay them?? De same taxpayers who ABLP try to fool off with their election gimmicks!! Dem really think we stupid bwoy..

  4. … And what incentives do the prudent, the frugal and the regular payers get?

If we don’t receive any sort of credit notes for regularly paying on time, then ABLP are definitely on course to lose the next General Election.

How can the country afford this? Is this not blatant electioneering?

LET’S ALL GO INTO DEBT SO THAT THE ABLP CAN PAY OUR UTILITY BILLS … HAS THE PM LOST THE PLOT?

HE’S MAKING IT UP AS HE GOES ALONG!

    • @Brixtonian EXACTLY.
PM encouraging people to NOT pay utility bills.
This is one of their election ploys – more coming fer sure.
Everybody who has scrimped, maybe working a payment plan & doing the decent right thing & paying their bills must feel disrespected. I do.

  5. Citizens of Antigua Remember you or a family member was sent home without nothing for 2 – 6 months because of a vaccine mandate and testing mandate now it’s your turn to act accordingly don’t even think about saying “me nar vote again” because this party disappointed us, it was the biggest mistake of our lives politically, time to get them out. All vaccinated and non vaccinated, let’s get rid of these evil people we have placed to manage our affairs. Families still haven’t received no monies for the wrongful dismissal from work. They didn’t care for us during the 2 years locked down but now election is around the corner love has filled their heart for the people? Let’s make a change! The worst party right now is Labour too much pain and suffering, suicide, abuse of drugs, abduction , passport scandal, self enrichment and corruption. We don’t need a crime minister with a bunch of yes men that controls every avenue of the governmental institution. Remember tear gas Sunday just for standing up for your rights the police was ordered by the PM and Ag.

Under this badministration your rights was trampled upon numerous times. It is Time to stand up for Antigua not for politicians and party, stand up for you and me. Country first before things get worst like a hurst!

      • @ Not trump

VOTE FOR WHO? JOANNE MASSIAH AND THE DNA? VOTING FOR THEM MEANS RE-ELECTING ABLP; BUT AS FAR AS THEM CONCERNED THEY WOULD RATHER ANTIGUA PEOPLE SUFFER UNDER ABLP THAN TO ELECT A CARING AND PEOPLE GOVERNMENT. DEM JUST BAD-MINDED.
DNA= ‘DO NOT ANNOY’ US PLEASE, BECAUSE YOU WILL BE SPOILERS. YOU WILL BE WASTING YOUR DEPOSITS. TEK IT FROM ME.

    • Absolutely correct @ Time 4 a change. We must never ever forget the appalling treatment around those 2-6 months, and without a shadow of a doubt this put us on a path of financial struggles and dire health problems due to the mass coercive vaccination programmes.

We must never forget how Gaston Browne’s “black shirts” treated the law-abiding citizens of Antigua on Teargas Sunday.

I have just looked over some video footage of that day, and even the police and security forces were overcome by the gasses … an awful day in the political history of Antigua!!!

  6. So stupid!!! What about the people who struggled to pay their bill??? You’re really thonk you’re getting them to vote for you???

  7. This is ridiculous .. smh
The leaders of this country need to Commit to long term prosperity for the country .. not a quick fix to get votes.. the roads have been horrible.. there is no running water .. schools need security .. let’s not get forget about the hospital.. but Antigua people are simple minded … they will take the free light bill and whatever handouts they get and go vote.. so sad.. the government, no matter which government will never give Antiguans more because Antiguans don’t demand more .. if a nation of people who don’t consistently have water a basic human right to bathe and cook for their families don’t stand up and strike and protest for that .. then they don’t require much .. plenty talk and no action so any government will give them the bare minimum because there is no accountability. Good luck .. happy election and then the same shit over again the next day

    • I agree @ Lenny, the world and his dawg already perceive Antiguans as simpletons when it comes to dealing with politicians and political matters.

We have to now show the world that we are not!

ANTIGUANS HAVE GOT TO SHOW SOME POLITICAL FORTITUDE TO NOW DESTROY THIS MYTH WHEN OUR OUT OF CONTROL PRIME MINISTER EVENTUALLY CALLS THE ELECTION.

Surely, even the ABLP generational supporters can see this move smacks of political inducements.

I’m really interested to find out how they try to defend this dodgy election stimulus by Gaston Browne.

  8. What an act of desperation. Wipe off arrears but for months us small contractors can’t get paid from the treasury, what do the people who pay they bills get? (We’re the majority by the way), no school security, you already times over increased borrowing therefore the nation’s debt, APUA doesn’t have the money to build a proper water system but elections are in the air so you’re pulling your desperation stunts out of your rear. Wheel and keep wheeling because we don’t want you back again

  9. The company and this government mek me sick
Hurry up name a date for elections, same long line at apua, same long line on election day
Hope no hurricane pass through cause little wind and current off. RO plant all over and water off. And Dem expect People Fu Applaud Fish for Swimming . .
    In case people forgot:
We needed water to wash hands, a covid measure
    Stored water breed dengue
We needed current to run water pumps

Oh and as for that big pothole on friar’s hill road and the poor lighting, heads need to roll. For the amount of tax I pay, you are NOT doing me a favor! REMEMBER THAT!

  10. While we welcome any assistance to help the poor and needy it sounds like a desperate political move. I thought all 17 seats were in the bag!!! With that level of confidence there is no need for such largesse… there is no perfect time to call an election. The more you bassa bassa is the more things could go wrong!!! Something off!!!!

    • Social transformation need to do their needs assessment …they must do the work. Who need a write-off can then get a write-off
Meanwhile who need a payment plan can apply to apua

  11. Now tell me, where was this generosity when we were getting back or trying to get back on our feet in 2021. All the big talk about what you were prepared to sacrifice, why are you trying now to get votes?
That electricity worker in the photo must be paid so if the money don’t come from people paying bills, where is it coming from?.
No paying electricity, no paying at mount stjohns.
How do these systems stay logistically afloat?

  12. Well I’m putting in my two cents. About how this government has turn this place topsitudy. When you work for any company you are given twelve uncertified sick days per year. I have been sick for a month and send my doctor paper to this company. When I didn’t receive any payment I contacted the accounts department who told me I have no payment to get because all my sick days have been used up. They took my certified sick out my uncertified sick which was nothing. Then when I return to work I was told they are going to give me 15 days out of a month doctor’s certified sick now I’m back again on sick leave because same problem was aggravated on the job now this is an occupational injury and the work place refuse to pay me because they believe I’m faking my injuries and they claim they have to review my certified paper and the property nurse report to consider if they would pay me or not.

Now I’m a single parent of four who has bills, loans and children to take care of. My first sick leave over two months now nah reach social security yet. But every week one chunck load a money a come out my salary Fu pay them government benefits. that a pay them money gluttons who live in style while our pots leak. N our pockets develop butterfly.

I’m fed up no one care too zhits about the struggling man. During covid I had no help. In the area that I live they were giving out food packages I never get one. Yet I witnessed friends fetching case of tuna, milk, beef, vianna sausages, potatoes ,rice them friends get them but when a poor old woman that doesn’t have no support that contributed to this country goes to get a package she was ordered out. I felt her pain so with my little hustle money that I had to survive I gave it to her.

We weren’t our brother’s keeper then and we are still not our brother’s keeper now it is all about who has it make it or the weloff florished off the poor man’s expence.

Now they claim they are going to wipe all delinquent electricity bills what about for those families who are struggling to keep their utilities payed?

What is in place for them? My bill never so high yet it’s has been always $130/”150 the most now it’s like me a supply one whole hotel how that possible?
Now me figure out them trick. When them want you Fu pay more money in utilities especially electricity them keep taking off them current and then the force it comes back on in it jumps the meter big time. It’s just like you keep taking off your light it jumps the meter so you are not doing any good.
They know that so they keep doing it and we pay all that to pay off their huge debt.

May the lord have mercy on us all.

    • Enough your story is concerning
I can share that when I had an injury, the legal mind who was the be on my side wanted to stay in good graces with the hounds while running with the hares. So the case was botched and along the way, the overtones was that I was faking it. A year after, that very person had the very same injury.
God don’t SLEEP!!! What a man soweth, he wil REAP!!

  13. We still can’t get water and so the remedy for that is to wipe off electricity arrears? We supposed to feel good about that? And of course they make the announcement but give no specifics. That type of psychology nar work this time.

  14. This is the ultimate sign of desperation by this government. It’s obvious they’re worried about losing and will do and promise anything to remain in power and maintain their various self-enrichment schemes. My people don’t fall for it, we are the ones with the power. Our vote is our power. They work for us and cannot get back to parliament if we don’t vote for them. If they were so confident in their record they would not have to come with these obvious election gimmicks. Let them come with their election enticements, take them and then vote them out. Dem really think people this stupid.

  15. Pure bribery. ALP using state assets to bribe people to vote for them. Same thing with immigration amnesty. Bet you a waiver of arrears of property taxes and “land for youth” are the next things we going hear about. Sickening.

  16. I know that this has nothing to do with this article but because this article will attract a lot of readers I choose to state my concern here.
The Brownies Bakery in Point has a lot of flies loitering on the bread and pastries on display. The Health Department needs to visit that bakery.
Not sure if the flies are coming from the vegetable vendor or the garage bin located just outside of the establishment.

  17. Here they come again!! promises, promises are very comforting to fools. Even when its a day late and a dollar short. Antigua Bill is a born and raised Antiguan I know how my people are, all talk and no action. Many instances will come with hands stretched out and mouth open looking something. In many instance they end up getting taken for everythimg while waiting for the promise thats too good to be true. One good example of how the F**ching politicians in antigua dont give a damn about you the people who employ them. One example, Sir george walters introduced the MBS to minimize the probbility poverty and food insecurity for the elderly. subsequently the ALP regained power, then the UPP for 8 years and now again the ALP for the past 7 years. Tell me what have they done? They all have lied and made promises while stealing from you to enrich themselves. People of my generation are experiencing food insecurity and poverty because of their promises. Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul don’t work. To make a long story short people wake up and get rid of both political parties. Beware of politicians making promises and bearing Gifts. Let them Know that you don’t want nor need their promises. All you want is equal rights and justice and most of all accountability and transparancy. Demonstrate that you are good stewarts of the nations resources. Do you think they are wiping off your electricity arreas as a favor to you? Once they do that they expect your vote in return. Heads I win Tales you lose but they will never lose because Antigua is their Casino. The house never loses but they will run it into the ground and sell you back into slavery. Be aware they are thinking of exporting nurses to noth merican countries.

    • @ Antigua Bill

USEFUL IDIOT……anybody who uses the phrase ‘they are all the same’ or something similar is an ABLP operative who is trying to pretend that they are neutral.

GET RID A DEM……….THEY ARE WORRIED ABOUT THEIR ENRICHMENT SALARY.

  18. True to form.
    $2 DOLLARS IN DEM POCKET.
A LIKKLE FOOD IN DEM POT.
A LIKKLE GAS IN DEM CAR.
    DEM WILL VOTE ABLP.

THAT’S WHAT THEY SAID ON GASTON BROWNE POINTE FM RADIO STATION.

    HERE THEY COME.

    IT’S ELECTION TIME AGAIN.

  19. “Me nar vote again” is a disappointing phrase when the top dawg didn’t look out for his supporters. Everybody feel the pain the only option is to remove them don’t leave them to wreck the country more while we still complain things are hard. When a shoes is old, torn, dirty and smelly you change it. Unless you want to live like a vagrant for the rest of your lives. It’s time to remove the old, torn, dirty smelly shoes, let’s kick them out of office. We demand better, respect, transparency. Time for a change.
Without a doubt vote the Red dead Party out!

  20. Wait and see Antiguans stop paying their utilities bill. Then APUA start cutting off their utilities. The government did the same thing last election. So the government hopes that by bribing the people they will vote for them. After the election, the people will still not be able to pay their bills and their utilities will be disconnected again. Why are these people so desperate to stay in power that they will use the people’s money to bribe them? Antiguans need work so they can pay their bills. Since they are playing you for stupid, take their offer and still vote them out.

  21. This government is laughable!!
    Why now?
    Why now?
    Election!!
    Don’t be fooled my people!!
    Vote them out!!!
    Election gimmick!!
    Oh my!!
    Desperation!

  22. You asked for stimulus…the time is now ripe for you to get same. Having paid civil servants for months during the covid 19 pandemic against no revenue intake the time is here for you to get those stimulus with the economy on a rebound.

PM I applaud you for ensuring the country had the capacity first to offer OTHER stimulus rather than bowing to pressure. Being in opposition is a batsman paradise to #HFWL can promise all to comfort fools. 5 more years sir!!!!! Please though have public works fix those two rough patches in Piggots. One by Burma road and the other around 300 feet up. Have them do it tomorrow Monday.

    • Actually, @ Just Saying, even though I don’t agree with a word that you are saying; I strangely admire you for having the guts to respond to these ABLP bribery and inducements; whereas, many known Gaston Browne supporters on this ANR thread have strangely gone AWOL on this matter.

I could name the usual suspects, but why bother when regular readers know who they are – they’ve gone into hiding for some reason!

Anyway, grudging respect for defending the indefensible …

    • @ Just Saying

The time is now for election bribery.

      YOU THINK PEOPLE FOOLY.

  23. As usual, Gaston just put this proposal out yo gauge how people react. You know he is reading all the posts to see what people have to say. The message is clear, people won’t fall for the bribes this time. We recognize you can’t bribe people with their own money. Let’s vote this guy out!

  24. Hope he read this one :

U r a weakling! You hide and tek de vaccine
U owe healthworkers! U dont think we were important til u enact the mandate

    We never will FORGET

  25. Are they doing this again? Like they did in 2014 or 2018.Remebered they write off the arrears in APUA. Then what happened after that? APUA went to a local Bank and took out a pretty hefty LOAN. Did they get that loan because the Corporation was strapped for cash? Take all of the gifts and write-offs. Then when the Elections are called, vote their backsides out of OFFICE.

  26. I find the exchange of ideas and of critical thinking that I’m seeing in this thread encouraging, it’s great to see thought and passion being displayed.

Here in america, the majority of the people are fat, lazy, stupid marxist supporting, welfare collecting pigs. America’s labor participation rate is down to 61 percent, there are literally millions of jobs open because the average american wants to sit home playing video games, watching porn, doing drugs and the like instead of working.
Antiguans, keep thinking and for God’s sake, don’t become americans.

  27. You can always count on ALP to reward and court the deliquescents. Debt forgiveness from a utility company to get votes and then after elections electricity start to go off every minute for the people who pay bills on time because APUA don’t have money to maintain the service properly.

  28. Buying your vote is corrupt, please realize that you are a pawn. They really don’t care about you, but your vote so they can stay in power.
