ABEC bids farewell to Commissioner Anthonyson King as a sterling tenure ends

The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) bid farewell to long-standing Commissioner Mr. Anthonyson King on Wednesday, marking his last official working day before his tenure ends on Saturday, November 16, 2024, coinciding with his 75th birthday.

Mr. King, who first joined the Commission on August 7, 2010, served two consecutive terms, dedicating 14 years to supporting Antigua and Barbuda’s electoral process.

Reflecting on his time with ABEC, Mr. King, a lifelong educator, expressed his pride in the Commission’s progress over the years.

“This body works tirelessly to uphold democracy in Antigua and Barbuda. It’s been a privilege to see how much the Commission has evolved since I joined. I’m confident that it is in good hands going forward,” he stated.

Mr. King also spoke warmly of the many stalwarts and outstanding civil servants with whom he collaborated, noting that their shared commitment to advancing the nation’s electoral integrity transcended any political divides. He expressed gratitude to his wife of nearly 50 years, Mrs. Cicely King, for her unwavering support, and to his family and friends for their encouragement throughout his tenure.

During a special sitting held on Wednesday, November 13, ABEC’s Chairman Ambassador Arthur G. B. Thomas praised Mr. King as an invaluable member of the Commission. “Having worked with Mr. King over the years, I can attest to his deep knowledge of the electoral process, his dedication, and his genuine connection with our team. He has been a motivational presence, consistently offering guidance and support. He will be sorely missed,” said Ambassador Thomas.

Deputy Chairman Eugene Francis described Mr. King as a “man of the people” who, despite any personal political views, approached his duties with impartiality and a welcoming demeanor, which fostered strong relationships within the Commission.

Supervisor of Elections Mr. Ian S. Hughes commended Mr. King’s contribution, calling him a source of knowledge and inspiration who leaves a lasting impact on the Commission.

In recognition of his service, the Commission presented Mr. King with a commemorative plaque, a token of their collective appreciation for his dedication and influence on Antigua and Barbuda’s democratic process.

  2. Anthonyson King is one of our great and foremost Mathematician. He is a seasoned educator extraordinaire as well as a good, decent and competent man.
I know he served the Electoral Office with great distinction and was instrumental in ensuring that the office delivered on its mandate. The Electoral Office today is a far cry from what it was when it started and most of the changes over the years has been positive. My only concern from time to time was the growing political influence and would hope that we can witness an Office that the public can have full confidence in knowing well that it operates without any political influence or pressure.
I thank Mr King for his many years of service and wish him well.

  3. Quite funny that you lading him now and previously he was deemed a communist and terrorists. You not getting paid for this one.

  4. @Rovi – That is a lesson to us to not be discouraged and give up. If he had not persevered, the only reputation he would have is the negative one he was given at the time. Well done Mr. King. I was in an accident once where the other person was wrong and was trying to convince me to take the blame. Mr. King was furious and he turned his vehicle around to come defend me.
