ABEC Reverses Voter Re-registration Decision; UPP Plans Court Challenge

Source Real Nesw: The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has reversed its decision to conduct a complete re-registration of voters, opting instead for a voter identification card replacement program. This change, effective August 12, 2024, aligns with the preference of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) and Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

ABEC’s initial plan for re-registration aimed to address the expiration of voter ID cards in March 2024, affecting over 40,000 residents. However, ABEC announced in a news release toda that replacing the expired cards would better serve the electoral process.

In response, the United Progressive Party (UPP) announced its intention to challenge ABEC’s decision in court. During a General Council meeting on May 19, UPP members voted to oppose the reversal, citing concerns about voter list integrity and alleged voter transfers by Prime Minister Browne.

The UPP also launched a legal team and defense fund to support their challenge.

Prime Minister Browne argued that re-registration would be too costly and time-consuming, but the UPP maintains that the estimated EC $2.5 million cost is necessary to ensure fair elections.

The possible legal battle highlights ongoing tensions in Antigua and Barbuda’s efforts to uphold democratic processes.

  1. Is UPP proposing another fail experiment? Should the nation have a new re-registration process in October 2024, what would happen should persons choose to relocate their place of residence thereafter? My point is, the scrutineers have a job to do. They are the ones to ensure that the election is free & fair.

  2. Come folks! The appointment of Arthur Thomas and Ian Hughes is paying off. They were all set on re-registration until the idiot DAWG came up with something noone’s ever heard about.
What does this say about ABEC?
What do we expect when someone is caught red-handed and the DPP refuses to do her work?
@Bloody Bloke, really? Scrutineers ? When ABEC refuses to give them the picture list that they publish after the fact? Wow!
No wonder we’re in trouble here!
