Members of the ABDF and Royal Antigua and Barbuda Police Force completed training with other personnel across the Eastern Caribbean in a virtual leadership course funded by the UK Ministry of Defence.

Two courses were delivered by the UK’s Defence Academy in partnership with Cranfield University and the Regional Security System team in Barbados.

They covered important areas such as leadership models and ethics; critical decision making; the challenge of change and communication and influence within Defence and the wider Security Sector; internationally recognized best practices; and techniques to mitigate risks and failures. Resident British Commissioner to Antigua and Barbuda, Lindsy Thompson, who opened one of the training courses in March, awarded successful participants with certification on Thursday 22 April at a short ceremony held at the Sir Wright F. George Police Academy.

Thompson congratulated the awardees and encouraged them to build on their learning experience, saying “there can be no let-up in your continuous strive for excellence. The UK believes that it is in our collective interests to promote prosperity and security – a stable, prosperous and secure world provides opportunity of prosperity for all.”

Chief of Defence Staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, Colonel Telbert Benjamin stated, “I would like to express my profound gratitude to the UK Defence College in collaboration with the RSS for facilitating these two virtual courses during these challenging times where strategic leadership is of utmost importance. Also, I would like to congratulate the participants for their participation, while acknowledging that they have gained valuable information that would improve their leadership in a personal capacity and that of their respective organizations”.

The Commissioner of Police, Atlee Rodney, also noted that “the significant value of continued training cannot be overly emphasized especially at senior leadership level. The contribution of these two courses will advance our efforts in the Police Force to improve our leadership skills and our overall performance of providing high quality law enforcement services to our nation. We commend the UK government and the RSS for providing these learning opportunities and express our heartfelt gratitude to them for yet another excellent collaborative effort.”
