Light Earthquake Strikes Near Antigua and Barbuda
In the early hours of Thursday, July 4, 2024, a light magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean, near the coast of Antigua and Barbuda.
The tremor was detected at 3:21 am local time (GMT -4) and had a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles).
Despite the proximity, the quake was not felt or reported by residents.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) was the first to report the quake just four minutes after it occurred.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located 79 km (49 miles) south of Codrington, Barbuda, where very weak shaking might have been experienced. Other nearby locations, such as St. John’s in Antigua, Basseterre in Saint Kitts and Nevis, and various towns in surrounding islands, reported no noticeable shaking.

The EMSC also noted that the nearest active volcano, Liamuiga, is located 140 km (87 miles) from the epicenter. Weather conditions at the time included overcast clouds, a temperature of 28.1°C (83°F), and an easterly wind at 9 m/s (17 knots).
