The government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced the introduction of 45-minute parking permits in St John’s as part of broader efforts to revitalise the city’s market area and improve traffic flow.
Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst confirmed at Monday’s post-Cabinet press briefing that the new time-limited permits aim to support shoppers while maintaining accessibility and order in the capital’s busy commercial zones.
The initiative forms part of a wider urban renewal strategy spearheaded by Minister Rawdon Turner, which includes reorganising vending spaces and enhancing the aesthetics of the St John’s market district.
“The idea is to allow people to come into St John’s, shop conveniently, and leave, freeing up parking for others and ensuring a better experience for all,” Hurst said.
The 45-minute compromise emerged following consultations between the government, vendors, and other stakeholders, who rejected proposals for both shorter and longer parking durations.
Further details on the start date and permit implementation are expected to be announced by Minister Turner in the coming days.
The market revamp is part of the government’s push to modernise St John’s while maintaining economic opportunities for small businesses and vendors.

whats the cost for the permits?
They need to have more parking spaces in town for workers so that shoppers are the only.ones parking on the street. Then they should introduce parking meters and Meter Maids.
The monstrosity opposite Apua on independence Avenue should be completed and another one build further downtown.
Will they have proper staff to monitor the time limits?
Great in theory
Market already feeling congested
What about elders that does take 10 years to shop?
With all this talk about removing vendors off the streets it’s just a matter of time before they start coming back one by one, this administration is mortally afraid of foreigners and they know it, just watch what happens as soon as the next election season begins then the administration will start making all sorts of excuses
Good ideas, good progress.
@Dr. Strange. You are strange aren’t you?! It sounds like YOU are mortally afraid of foreigners! Toughen up buttercup. You can’t be a scared little girl for all of your life. It’s time to grow up. Everything will be fine!
St. John’s looks so much better. There are other ways one can be self employed. Around the public market were several members of the same household. Some of the same people also selling out woods and other locations on the island.
Mr. Turner don’t try and stretch it too much by trying to accommodate too many vendors.
There was an idea by both governments to cover Tanner street . I would not go beyond Corner Alley because after that the place doesn’t like clean. Overgrown bushes and old abandoned house.
What about the long awaited car park. The government finds all sorts of ways to waste tax payers money on all sorts of stuff. I am sure the self enrichment system in place by politicians- could have easily completed the car park. There are public officials that have made enough money from corruption that could have completed the car park. The millions spent on St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s could have completed the car park. If not completely the parking areas and the surrounding.
Seems like the government is waiting for this structure to become compromised and will have to be demolished.
We were told by the government that all the ownership documentation were completed and work was going to commence years ago. We even saw two friends of the top dog working in the project. Fencing and cleaning and then again the work stopped. No explanation to us the people
