A moderate 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the North Atlantic Ocean on Monday, September 23, 2024, at 1:58 pm local time (GMT -4), 174 km east of Barbuda Island, Antigua and Barbuda.
The earthquake, confirmed by the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), occurred at a depth of 14 kilometers and released seismic energy equivalent to 239 tons of TNT.

Despite the earthquake’s proximity to Antigua and Barbuda, the tremor was reported to have caused only very weak shaking in nearby areas.
The closest town to the epicenter, Codrington in Barbuda, located 175 km away, likely experienced mild effects. Other nearby locations, including All Saints and St. John’s on Antigua, also reported minimal shaking. No significant damage or injuries have been reported.
